The Asterix series is a popular French comic based on the comedy and satire genres. It is written by the well-known French author Rene Goscinny. Albert Uderzo was chosen as the illustrator for the series. The series initially appeared in the Franco-Belgian comics magazine called Pilote in the year 1959. When the author Goscinny died in 1977, Albert Uderzo took over the series to write the next books in the series. The series consists of 36 books in total, which were published between the years 1959 and 2015. Throughout the series, the authors have described the exploits of the indomitable Gauls as they resisted the forcible occupation of the Romans. They did this with the help of a magical potion that was prepared by their druid called getafix. the recipient of the potion was given superhuman strength for some time. all the protagonists mentioned by the author goscinny go through numerous adventures. Among the most prominent were Asterix and Obelix. In the names of all the characters, the ending ‘ix’ is similar to the suffix ‘rix’ meaning king and is seen in royal Gallic names such as orgetorix, vercingetorix, dumnorix, etc. Most of the stories described in the books show the protagonists traveling to foreign countries, however, many of them are still shown staying in their villages. Much of the historical portions of this exciting series are set alternately abroad and in Gaul. In fact, the even volumes take place abroad, while the odd volumes take place in Gaul, mainly in rural regions. The Asterix series is also known under the name ‘The Adventures of Asterix’ in some parts of the world and is known to be listed among the most famous Franco-Belgian comics. the series is believed to have been translated into over 100 foreign languages, becoming more popular in European countries. after its tremendous success, the series was chosen to be adapted into up to 13 movies. nine of the films are animated while the remaining 4 are live action films. several games have also been developed featuring the characters from the series. A theme park called Parc Asterix is ​​also created in Paris, which resembles the setting in this series. In 2009, about 325 million copies of the Asterix books were successfully sold in print worldwide. this established authors uderzo and goscinny as the best-selling French novelists.

The first novel in the Asterix series is titled ‘Asterix the Gaul’. It was first released in 1959 and later re-released in 2004 by Orion Book Publishing. Author Goscinny introduced the central characters of this book as Asterix, Panoramix, and Obelix. At the beginning of the book, all of Gaul is depicted as being under Rome’s control, except for a small town in Armorica. The inhabitants of this town have become invincible by consuming the magic potion made by the getafix druid. To discover the secret behind the strength of the Gauls, a Roman commander places a spy in Armorica dressed as a Gaul. however, the Roman soldier’s identity is revealed when his fake mustache falls off. Before being caught, the spy successfully discovers the secret and reveals it to his commander, the Bonus Centurion. he intends to overthrow julius caesar’s government and therefore orders getafix captured. he wants getafix to pronounce the recipe so he can make his soldiers like the Gauls. but, he doesn’t find any success despite capturing getafix. Asterix finds out about Getafix’s capture when a car salesman informs him about it. Asterix infiltrates the camp and listens to the Bonus Centurion tell his second-in-command his intentions about the rebellion.

then asterix suggests getafix to accept the centurion’s demands to make the potion. getafix asks for a fake ingredient, strawberries, which the centurion orders his soldiers to bring as soon as possible. Until the moment the strawberries arrive, both Getafix and Asterix relax in greater luxury and when they finally arrive, they eat all of them and reveal that they can make the potion without using them. in the end, getafix concocts a potion that causes the recipient’s beard and hair to grow excessively. getafix also tricks the romans into drinking the potion and they all soon have long hairs all over their bodies. The centurion begins to plead with Getafix to prepare the antidote after seeing the miserable state of his soldiers. While you’re at it, he takes a small amount of the royal potion and give it to Asterix. The two escape captivity and give information about the rebellion to Julius Caesar when they are stopped by his army while escaping. Julius thanks them for giving the important information and lets them go, but reminds them that they will continue to be his enemies. the next installment written by goscinny is called ‘asterix and the golden sickle’. It was first published in 1960 and then again in 2004. At the beginning of the novel, a Gallic village is described as facing disaster after Getafix breaks through the golden sickle. without the sickle, he will not be able to attend the annual conference of druids. furthermore, he will not be able to cut the mistletoe, which he uses to make the effective potion to keep the Romans at bay. to help getafix, asterix & Obelix undertook a trip to Lutetia to buy a new sickle for Obelix’s cousin. During the journey, the two encounter bandits, who are easily defeated by them. Soon, a traveling companion informs them that there is a shortage of sickles in Lutetia. and when obelix & Asterix arrives in Lutetia, they discover that Obelix’s blacksmith cousin, Metallurgix, is missing. Asking the neighbors, they both turn to Metallurgix’s main competitor called Navishtrix. offers them the sickle at a very high price. when they refuse to buy at said price, Navishtrix attempts to force them, but is instead defeated in the fight with them. After being pardoned for surplus dairy, Asterix learns that the competitors have captured Metullurgix. a drunk informs him that the competitors can be found near the boulone forest. While Asterix visits the competitors’ hideout, followed by Obelix, he finds a large quantity of golden sickles in his store. But, before they could take any, Navishtrix attacks them with his and Clovogarlix’s minions. once again he is defeated and escapes. As Asterix follows Navishtrix to DairyProdus, he learns that he had ordered Navishtrix to attack him and Obelix both times just for fun. when the centurion finds out about this act of milkprodus, he imprisons him and navishtrix and releases metallurgix. He, in turn, gives Asterix the best batch of his sickles for free in thanks. they are very happy with this gesture from metallurgix and return to their village to help getafix overcome his problems due to the absence of a sickle.
