Clementine is a series of children’s novels by New York Times bestselling, award-winning author Sara Pennypacker. the first novel in the series is the “clementine” published in 2006, from which the series takes its name. Following the huge commercial success of the first novel in the series, Pennypacker went on to write six more titles in the series, culminating in the seventh in the “all Clementine” series in 2015. Some of the most popular aspects of the books in the series are their illustrations, which are done by marla frazee who has been working on the novels since the first novel. the novels make use of drawings to portray the relationship between the characters. what happens is that sara usually writes the stories, after which she enters frazee to impart the emotion and body language by drawing the images. The series follows Clementine, an unintentionally devious, lovable and eccentric eight-year-old girl, as she navigates her third-grade school and her home life. She is an impulsive and artistic girl with red curls, who is often found in the director’s bad books for her characteristic imperfections and lack of cooperation.
Because she writes for children, the clementine series of novels is written to correct some environmental or social injustice. pennypacker is usually driven to write when something makes her angry. However, despite her stance on the issues, the novels never seem too preachy, as she creates a believable backstory for Clementine’s character in each novel, threatens and challenges her cause, then records the her reaction to challenges. for example, the last novel in the clementine series was inspired by her interest in animal welfare, resulting in a book on the subject of animal welfare. Despite drawing on some moral or social ground, most of Clementine’s novels are based on people the author knows. she keeps track of people’s funny stories, quirks and personalities, which she then modifies and reproduces throughout the series to create very interesting and believable characters. in fact, clementine, the main character of the series, is based on her son, who struggled with adhd at school. This perhaps informs Clementine’s sweet, cheerful and positive attitude, who also has problems with attention. The school is putting on a talent show to raise money and all students are expected to perform to achieve the goal. Clementine finds herself in a bind, since she doesn’t think she has any talent. almost everyone in her class has some creative idea with her best friend margaret de ella who she often thought she was dumb and came up with the excellent idea of explaining how to dress fashionably. Only Clementine has nothing special to show during the talent show. But in her quest to find something to do for the show, she soon discovers that she is better at many things than many people, like Margaret’s brother or her father, who can’t do quick math in their heads like she can. but this is not going to be a math quiz and she needs to find something else to present. Margaret tries to help her with an alphabetical art game, but she soon falls apart when she discovers she can’t handle the mess of glue and beer bottles. Just when she is about to give up, the school principal discovers that there is one thing that Clementine can do better than the others.
