mary poppins is a series of eight children’s books written by British-Australian writer p. I travers and published during the period from 1934 to 1988. Mary Shepard was the illustrator for the entire series.
The books focus on magical English nanny Mary Poppins, who is swept by the east wind to 17 Cherry Tree Lane, London, and Banks House to look after her children. She encounters pavement painters and merchants, and several adventures follow one another, until Mary Poppins abruptly leaves, that is, “comes out”. Only the first three of the eight books feature Mary Poppins arriving and leaving. the last five books recount previously unrecorded adventures of the original three visits of hers. As Travers explains in her introduction to Mary Poppins in the Park, “She can’t come and go forever.”

Corry, an encounter with the Bird Woman, a birthday party at the zoo among the animals, and a Christmas shopping trip with a star named Maia from the Pleiades cluster in the constellation Taurus. at the end, in perhaps the most iconic image associated with mary poppins, she opens her umbrella and the west wind blows her away.
original and revised versions of the chapter “Bad Tuesday”
mary poppins contained a version of the “bad tuesday” episode in which mary and the children use a compass to visit places around the world in a remarkably short period of time. The original story in the 1934 edition contained a variety of cultural and ethnic types from Chinese, Native Alaskan or Inuit, Sub-Saharan African, and Native American. travers responded to criticism by revising the chapter twice. a 1967 revision removed offensive words and stereotypical descriptions and dialogue, but kept the plot of foreign visitors and retained drawings of ethnic stereotypes found at the compass points. in 1981 a second revision replaced people with animals; Original illustrator Mary Shepard altered the four compass directions in the accompanying drawing to show a polar bear in the north, a macaw in the south, a panda in the east, and a dolphin in the west. mary poppins was banned from circulation in the san francisco public library system in 1980 due to negative stereotypes. the 1981 revised version was included in bbc radio 4’s 2004 adaptation of mary poppins starring juliet stevenson.

nothing has gone right since mary poppins left number seventeen cherry tree lane. one day when mrs. banks sends the kids to the park, michael flies his kite into the clouds. Everyone is shocked when Michael picks up his kite and finds that Mary Poppins is at the end of the string. she takes charge of the children once more (although she will only stay “until she breaks the chain of her locket”). The last time Mary dropped off the bank kids on Cherry Tree Lane, she took a “return ticket, just in case.” in the third book, she returns to the park in front of cherry tree lane where she came from, falling with fireworks. Once again, she takes on babysitting duties at the bank house, guiding Jane, Michael, young twins John and Barbara (as well as new baby Annabel) on various magical adventures. The residents of Cherry Tree Lane are distraught to learn that their beloved Number Eighteen, a vacant house for which each neighbor has created a desired and imaginary tenant, is about to be occupied by Mr. Banks’ childhood governess, Miss Andrew, also known as “The Holy Terror.” Her dreaded arrival also brings a pleasant surprise, as Luti, a boy from the South Seas, has accompanied her as a servant and student. Thrilled at the prospect of a new friend, Jane and Michael are frustrated by the restrictions the hypochondriac Miss Andrew has placed on Luti, who increasingly longs for her family and her tropical surroundings. When the call on her heart to return home becomes more than she can bear, it’s Mary Poppins who makes the journey possible through a visit to the man on the moon.

The character first came to life in one of the first television plays broadcast live in 1949 on CBS Television, as part of their Studio One anthology series. She was played by character actress Mary Wickes. eg marshall played mr. banks and future child star lassie tommy rettig played michael. David Opatoshu played Bert, who was a matchmaker (match seller) in this version.

mary poppins was made into a film based on the first four books in the series by walt disney productions in 1964. according to the film’s 40th anniversary dvd release in 2004, walt disney first tried to buy the film rights to mary poppins starting on pg. I Travers as early as 1938, but was rejected because Travers did not believe that a film version of his books would do justice to his creation and did not want an animated cartoon based on it. The books had been favorites of Disney’s daughters growing up, and she finally managed to buy the rights in 1961, though Travers demanded and got script approval rights.
The relationship between Travers and Disney is detailed in Mary Poppins She Wrote, a biography of Travers by Valerie Lawson, published by Aurum Press in the UK. the relationship is also the subject of the 2013 disney movie saving mr. banks, starring emma thompson as travers and tom hanks as walt disney.
The process of planning the film and composing the songs took about two years. the songs in the film are by the sherman brothers. Mary Poppins is played by British actress Julie Andrews. Disney cast Dick Van Dyke in the key supporting role of Bert, while the Banks Kids were played by Karen Dotrice and Matthew Garber. George and Winifred Banks were played by David Tomlinson and Glynis Johns. the film features a mix of adventures and episodes taken from each of the existing novels, and new events created for it. In notable differences from the original novels, the film does not include the characters John, Barbara, or Annabel Banks, and Mary Poppins herself is noted as being noticeably friendlier.

author p. I Travers resisted selling the stage rights to the Mary Poppins stories for many years, as a result of her distaste for the 1964 film version and her perception that Walt Disney treated her rudely at the film’s release. p>
After the 1980 Picketwire stage production at La Junta, Colorado, Travers eventually sold the stage rights to London theater producer Cameron Mackintosh. she agreed on the condition (expressed in her will) that only English-born writers, and no Americans, particularly anyone involved in film production, would be directly involved in the creative process of the stage musical. Despite her deep antipathy for the film, Travers eventually acquiesced to Mackintosh’s insistence that the stage production be allowed to use the Sherman Brothers’ iconic songs from the 1964 film.
the world premiere of the stage adaptation of mary poppins took place at bristol racecourse in the uk in september 2004. the production then moved to the prince edward theater in the west end of London on December 15, 2004, where it ran for three years before closing in January 2008. george banks is the employer of mary poppins. works in a bank and lives at no. 17 cherry tree lane with his wife and his children. in the books he is rarely present, but he abruptly loves his wife and children. In the film he has a more prominent role as a work-conscious mischievous man who wants order and largely ignores his children and wife, but later his attitude changes for the better as Bert convinces him that while focusing on his life in the bank, his whole life, including the childhood of his children, escapes him. none of this is as much as mentioned in the book. His role in the stage musical is similar to that in the film, but has an additional backstory drawn from the original books, in which he was ignored by his parents and tormented by a cruel governess throughout his childhood. in the 1964 disney movie he is played by david tomlinson; In the 2004 BBC Radio 4 drama, he is played by David Timson.

to celebrate the centenary of p. i travers living in bowral, a world record attempt was made for the world’s largest umbrella mosaic at bradman oval, bowral, at 2:06 pm on may 7, 2011. the event was organized by the youth arts council of the southern highlands. the record was achieved, with 2115 people. an aerial photograph was taken by helicopter.
