There are multiple web platforms that play the role of intermediary between the arch reader and the publisher. The one I have the most experience with is netgalley. Below I will list, in no particular order, some of the features it offers.
- on netgalley, you can be instantly approved as a reviewer for books they have the option to read now. no application is needed for these books. remember not to bite off more than you can chew as not submitting a review will affect your credibility.
- you can search for publishers and read their requirements at search for publishers -> view approval preferences. This way, you know exactly what each of them expects from a reviewer and can proceed accordingly.
- When you order a book, you are asked to provide a little information about why you want to read it.

things to keep in mind if you choose the netgalley way
after creating an account, be sure to link all relevant social networks to your profile, starting with goodreads. For example, if you primarily review books on instagram like me, paste a link to your instagram on my main blog/site.

pay attention to your biography. this will be relevant when publishers receive your request and go to your profile. One of the things they will look for is your bio, which should contain all the relevant information about you while being strong and concise. where do you post your reviews? how many followers do you have? what are you passionate about in books? What aspects do you touch on in your reviews?

once you write your book review, paste it into netgalley as well. that is how you will know that he completed what he set out to do. make sure to post your review on netgalley before the deadline.
Another important aspect to consider is the review rate, which is the percentage of reviewed books and approved books. this represents his credibility as an arc reader. Let’s say he applies for and is awarded 10 books, but ends up reviewing only two of them. your feedback rate will drop to 20%. not very attractive to publishers. while it’s okay not to finish the books you really hate, make sure your comment rate is as high as possible.
look for bows on instagram
If netgalley sounds like too much of a hustle, I have another proven way to find copies for advanced readers: casually look them up on social media. that’s how i came to be an arc reader for the scars we chose for a. lee hughes and her novel are now among my favorite reads of 2020.

if you have instagram, chances are you follow some bookstagram accounts. bookstagramers will occasionally share through their stories the opportunities they found. most of the time, they will direct you to an author’s post advertising the bow sale to anyone who is interested.
Another way to find these authors is to search for hashtags like #arcreaders, #arcreaderswanted, #advancedreadercopies. once you find a book that interests you, you’ll notice that most authors ask you to send them a private message.
Just as book lovers have their community on social media, authors and aspiring writers have theirs. As someone who is part of this community, I can tell you that it is heartwarming to follow you and support your dreams. you’ll get to see behind the scenes of writing a book, and you’ll be excited about them as launch day approaches. you’ll uncover those hidden gems, whether they come in the form of arcs or already published books that didn’t get a chance to benefit from better marketing.
Support self-published and wannabe authors if you can, befriend them if you want, but keep in mind we write very long subtitles.
