Searching for Text Books · GitHub

note: I found this on the /r/piracy subreddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/piracy/comments/3i9y7n/guide_for_finding_textbooks/?sort=confidence) however I am including a copy here just in case .

so you have a list of the books you need to buy for college. there are some really great resources for finding them online, but I’m going to go over the easiest methods to find them all here.

You are reading: How to use irc to download books

First, let’s start by using the method that will allow you to find the vast majority of books. Google. it tends to be easier if you can search multiple sites at once, and this is the easiest way to do it.

There was a search engine that /u/ratokursi created 3 years ago, but now most of the sites are dead or have changed the url. I decided to create a new one, this time after reviewing over 100 sites and adding others that work to the custom search engine.

this should be able to find most of your books. Unfortunately, not all published books will be on the internet.

trying “ext:pdf (book title)” in google might also produce some results, just be careful what you click.

so to find the ones you can’t find, there are other ways to find them.

you can download e-books via irc. the easiest way to search is on a search engine, like this: https://ixirc.com/. then follow the last part of /u/manwithoutmodem’s post:

irc

if you don’t know how to use irc to download books, check this link or read this:

irc

you obviously need an irc client installed, a quick google search should find plenty of decent free ones.

load the client and then type:

/irc.irchighway.net server

this will connect you to the irchhighway server. once you are there, type:

/Join #ebooks

this will take you to the ebook channel, which has over 2.2 terabytes of ebooks to download for free. once you’re in, all you have to do to find what you want is simply type:

@search for “author or book title”

…removing the quotes.

You will receive a message saying that your search has been accepted. a few seconds later a search robot will offer you a file, so accept the download. that will send you a .txt file that is compressed. extract that and you will get a list of files. I looked up lian hearn and got a list of 147 files. here is an excerpt from it:

!bald lian hearn – [tales of the otori 02] – grass for his pillow .rar – 142.1 kb !bald lian hearn – tales of the otori 2 – grass for his pillow (co.rar – 355.3 kb !bald lian hearn – tales of the otori 2 – grass for his pillow (ht.rar – 140.54 kb !bald lianhearn-[otori_01]-across_the_nightingale_floor(v3).rar – 111.62 kb !bald lian_hearn-[otori_01]-across_the_nightingale_floor(v4.0. rar – 115.45 kb !bald lian hearn – [tales of the otori 03] – the shine of the moo.rar – 175.53 kb !bald lian hearn – [tales of the otori 04] – the harsh cry of the heron (v1.0) (html).rar – 351.80 kb !bald lian hearn – [tales of the otori 05] – heaven’s web is wide (v5.0) (epub).rar – 588.40 kb

Say I wanted to download the first book. would copy the text shown below, deliberately removing the file size information (I’ve been ripped off by that before):

!bald lian hearn – [tales of the otori 02] – grass for his pillow .rar

then just paste it into the irc window and then hit enter. after 2-3 seconds, a message appears asking you to accept or reject the file. you already know how to do the rest.

There are private torrent trackers that require registration or an invitation from someone else already on the site to join. some examples include freethetextbooks (open registration), my anonamouse, bitspyder, bitme, and bibliotik.

It is not advisable to try to get access to just one for a few textbooks, as most require some sort of effort to search for something that may or may not be there. (freethetextbooks might be worth it since it’s an open registry).

You probably won’t find the book online at this point. however, you still have many options. you can rent it at chegg, use it at biblio.com, or take it apart after you get it at amazon.

chegg is a site where you can rent or buy used textbooks and also read some online. there should be a way to extract the text from the page content, hopefully /u/molotviphone can give more details on this. it’s a really good way to store the book outside of the rental period.

biblio.com is a service similar to chegg, except it doesn’t have the online feature.

amazon is (as you probably already know) a site where you can buy new and used textbooks and also rent or buy digital versions for kindle, but they are overloaded with drm. the rented version usually comes in .azw4 file format, and the purchased version usually comes in .mobi file format. both are probably drm protected.

To remove drm, you’ll need caliber and some modified dedrm tools. (credit to no one)

This will allow you to remove the drm on all azw4 and mobi files while removing your account name from the metadata.

install caliber and install the dedrm plugin along with it. then you can drag the .azw4 or .mobi files into caliber and it will remove it. the file path containing your caliber library will contain the unedited version of the book.

Right now, you don’t have any use for the edited copy of the book, so you can return it if you want and basically get the book for free, or you can do whatever you want with the book.

if all else fails, or you need some kind of access code online, your only option is to purchase the physical copy of the book or the key online.

since sharing is important you should do your best to share the unscrambled version of the ebook if you got it from amazon or when you are done with the physical book scan it before reselling it and upload it so it will be easier for other people find the book some good places to do this are library genesis and any subreddit on this multireddit.

Hopefully, this will help you find most of the textbooks you need for your classes and allow you to study without having to give even more money to publishers trying to take advantage of our situation.
