After trying many different mask shapes and materials, I finally found the best combination of shape and fabric. I’ll go into more detail on how I decided on this, but since I personally hate reading long granny stories before I get to the pattern, I’ll post the free mask pattern video and download links here first before I get to the details. how does that sound?

recommended fabrics
- outer layer: a medium weight cotton such as cotton quilting, oxford, Japanese soft canvas, nothing too soft as there are no gaps around the mask and if the fabric is too soft. it will cling to your face when you inhale and exhale, as I found out when I tried this pattern with 2 layers of liberty grass.
- lining layer: I used quilting cotton, or you can use a thinner knit cotton like liberty tana lawn (very fresh and comfortable).
OK, now for Grandma’s story on how this pattern came to be. I know I’m very late to the mask tutorial game on youtube, some have been sewing since February. To be honest, there was no real shortage of masks in Singapore, especially given the government’s initial recommendations not to wear them unless you’re sick. I think that was a big mistake because the community spread got worse and we were forced to go into a circuit breaker. it was only sometime in April that they made it mandatory for everyone to wear a mask.
Sometime during that time I started making masks to donate. This is an ongoing nationwide effort calling on home sewers to help make masks for a wide range of recipients. it was then announced that it is now mandatory for everyone to wear a mask when leaving the house, or risk a fine. That’s when I started making some of the standard cup shaped masks for myself as I was having an allergic skin reaction to wearing surgical masks, especially when it’s hot and I start to sweat. it’s really uncomfortable and it takes a few days for the flare to resolve with steroids.
The cup masks were better, but I found it very uncomfortable to wear for long periods because the fabric sticks to my face when I breathe in and out and sometimes I feel like I can’t breathe at all. the other problem was that if you had to speak, the cup would slide around while you speak. so i started trying other designs, and finally saw this outlined design on a spanish instagrammer – ateliermaryribeiro she makes the coolest and trendiest face masks i’ve ever seen, but i couldn’t find the pattern anywhere (maybe it’s there but i couldn’t I can’t find it because I can’t read the language :p)
then i discovered this video from another youtuber romilda dias and this is where i learned how to draw the pattern. but there was only one size and I also wanted to make them for my kids so I transferred it to my pattern design software and using the measurements from the store bought masks as well as my kids measurements I got 6 sizes. the other difference is that in the videos of her she used a different way of attaching the rubber band. her method saves more elastic, but it wasn’t adjustable, which I found out when I sewed one too long and to shorten it I had to unstitch to replace it. this was a problem if I had to sew for other people who don’t stay with me as I won’t be able to adjust it to fit. so I also sewed a cover for the elastic.
why 6 sizes? well, in singapore, children over the age of 2 have to wear masks the moment they leave the house. I honestly find it quite ridiculous, because it’s really hard for them to keep it on or wear it properly without touching it 62374 times a day. but the law is such and I can’t change it, so I hope this will be useful for those who need it. As for the xxl size, I’ve heard some comments about the standard larger size not fitting larger men’s faces. so I graded it up one size, hope it works!
