Jeff Shaara, the son of an Italian immigrant, was born and raised in New Brunswick, New Jersey, in 1952. After a while, his family moved to Tallahassee, Florida. In 1974, Jeff Shaara graduated from the well-established Florida State University with a BA in Criminology. At the age of 16, Jeff Shaara ran a rare coin business out of his home before moving into a retail store. Jeff Shaara later moved to Tampa, where he made a name for himself by becoming one of the largest dealers in the Florida coin and precious metals market. Jeff Shaara’s father passed away in 1988. After his father’s death, Jeff decided to sell his business and, in turn, took over his father’s property. His father was also a prolific novel writer.
When Gettysburg, a 1993 film based on his father’s book, The Killer Angel, was released, Jeff Shaara was not only contacted but also persuaded to continue the story his father had started. he was also informed that if he was not willing to work on the project, then he should find someone else who would be willing to work on it. this was right after the movie did extremely well. After some consideration and soul searching, Jeff Shaara decided that he should give the project a try. The main reason Jeff Shaara was hesitant at first was because he had no previous writing experience. In 1996, Ballantine Books Publishers published Jeff’s first novel. gods and generals, was the title of the novel and was used as a prequel to his father’s novel. The novel made it onto the New York Times bestseller list and remained on the list for more than fifteen weeks. Critics from different corners of the world praised Jeff Shaara for his unique ability to write and also for writing the novel.

Because of his unique writing skills, Jeff Shaara received a Boyd Award from the American Library Press, which is one of the most prestigious literary awards in the United States. everyone including jeff shaara was shocked. Gods and Generals is a book that focuses on the events that occurred between the years 1858 and 1963, a period in which America was rocked by civil wars. The novel ended with the paired armies heading toward Gettysburg. Copying his father’s approach, Jeff focused on three top Army officers, Lt. Joshua Chamberlain, Lt. Gene Robert E. lee and winfield scottish rooster. In this book, Jeff Shaara describes the emotional drama of soldiers fighting against their old friends. Jeff Shaara also accurately reveals all the historical details such as troop movement, tactical combat situations and troop movement as well. This book also depicts a tired General Hancock, one day before he shoots his old friend, Lt. lewis of the confederate army.
This novel also reveals Lee’s disillusionment with the Confederate bureaucracy and the General’s religious fervor. the rest of the book covers all the main events that ultimately lead to war. The novel includes the battles of the first bull run, william burg, the second bull run, fredricksburg, and chantellorsville. In the year 1998, the author, Jeff Shaara, devised the sequel to the book, titled The Complete Last Measure. the last full measure remained at the top of the best-seller list for more than 13 weeks. the novel also garnered universal praise from critics and fans in different states and countries. The Rising Tide is the first book in Jeff Shaara’s World War II series of books. The worst catastrophe in the history of the United States occurred in 1927 when the Mississippi River overflowed its banks. More than 1,000 people died and approximately 9,000,000 people were left homeless from Cairo III to New Orleans.

The flood had a far-reaching effect on American society, as revealed in this gothic wish-filled epic. the flood managed to shatter the myth of a link between the southern aristocracy and the blacks of the delta. the main occupants of the red cross refugee camps were victims of African-American descent. African-Americans were not only killed but also harassed, both by civilians and by police. blacks are also reported to have been given minimal food to stave off starvation, denied federal repatriation through legalistic maneuvering, and were also forced by armed guards to work on extremely dangerous levees. the rise of the mississippi river triggered an exodus of african americans residing in the south to los angeles and chicago. With that said, author Jeff Shaara managed to deliver an extremely detailed world in his first installment of the military series focusing on World War II. Built on a solid foundation of historical fact, The Rising Tide puts readers at the center of the war by tracking the interactions and activities of various characters.
Some of these characters were real-life heroes, such as General Dwight Eisenhower, while others were larger-than-life personalities, such as Winston Churchill and Erwin Patton. the author also provides a panoramic view of the terrain through the perspectives of various troops who also participated in the main battles. If you are a person who enjoys military strategy and tactics, with a constant dose of the world of politics driving military action, then you are going to fall in love with this book. Although The Rising Tide is neither a character-focused book nor a study of some of the key figures of World War II, the author manages to integrate several key personalities with a highly deft and subtle hand, which in turn provides the emotional fuel the novel required. Shaara’s writing style resonates with the battle scenes in Angel Slayers, a book his father wrote; a short, clipped style that favors parsimony over talkativeness.
That said, The Rising Tide is a fantastic read. It’s very clear that the author has done a fantastic job of researching his story and then writing a gripping, fact-based account that is a bit short of the real story.
