The book is about two American families, specifically two mothers, each fighting for a better future for their children.
“As a mother, I identified with the fierce love of mothers for their children, even when they made mistakes,” said today’s book expert. “no one understands us like our families, even when they are imperfect.”
Set in the North Carolina piedmont region, the book introduces readers to Lacey May and Jade. The mothers find themselves at opposite ends of a debate as their community begins to bring students from the city’s majority black neighborhoods on the city’s east side to the predominantly white high schools on the west side.
Lacey May’s daughter, Noelle, and Jade’s son, Gee, cross paths while participating in a school play meant to bring students together. As their lives intertwine, their mothers make decisions that will haunt them all, even into their adult lives.
“The story is epic in scope. It’s about understanding demons and the difficulties that come our way and how they affect our lives,” Jenna said.
Coster added, “The book is also very much about the desire to belong and how powerful it is for all the characters.”

“what’s mine and yours” began as a short story about lacey may. “It was a story about the lengths a mother would go to in order to ensure a good future for her children,” Coster explained.
From there, Coster began writing about a second mother, named Jade. “The book really came out of the two mothers, their dreams for themselves and also their dreams for their children,” the novelist said for the second time.
With the two mothers, the author explores how their decisions can affect a family for decades. His stories begin in his small town in North Carolina, but then expand to other places as Noelle and Gee grow up and leave home.
“we see how families rise and fall together,” said jenna, “it felt like it was really current and also like something I had never read before”
