Born in 1934 on December 5, Joan Didion would grow up in the Sacramento area of California, which would come to have a great effect on her and her writing. her writing from the age of five, she would always be interested in the written word, reading everything she could during her childhood. Finding herself constantly with her head in a book, she overcame her shyness and anxiety through public speaking and acting.
Moving around a lot as a child, her father was in the army during WWII, and this would lead her to feel dislocated as a child. She would later, in 1956, graduate from the University of California at Berkley, earning a bachelor’s degree in English studies. this, along with winning an essay contest to work on vogue during her senior year, would pave the way to a successful literary career.

Working for vogue after leaving university, she started out as a copywriter there, before rising through the ranks. In time, she would become a feature editor, and it wasn’t long before she published her first novel ‘Run River’ in 1963. Then later in 1968 she would publish her non-fiction title ‘Slouching Within Bethlehem’, which it would be a collection of magazine pieces from the time he spent in california.
meeting the writer john gregory dunne, he would help her edit her first novel, since the two would marry a year later, in 1964. living together in california, she would enjoy a successful literary career, and later they would both marry They move to Manhattan, collaborating on novels and screenplays all the time.
