The author was interested in the horseshoe. His parents actually encouraged him to train in the field and earn a certificate of completion in horseshoeing. Finally, the author attended Grinnell College and the University of Washington, where he studied writing.
The author currently has a bachelor’s degree in English. Since then he has dabbled in a wide variety of literature, not to mention his love of pranks and music.
if john straley had to single out one moment that had the most drastic impact on his life, it would have to be the day he met jan in the north cascades mountains of washington state.
The author was a mule driver at the time. he spent his days lending his skills and talents to guiding local vendors. Jan Straley worked as a seasonal ranger in the high grasslands of the Pasayten Desert.
summers would always take john in that direction. John and Jan met, forged a bond, and eventually got married. Although John’s horseshoe training got him through, it didn’t take long for him to realize that racing had no real future for him.
So when Jan, a marine biologist, took a job in Sitka, Alaska, John happily followed suit. That was in 1977. The decision paid off, not only because John and Jan were able to stay together, but also because new opportunities were taken for the author to take advantage of.
john straley got a job at the alaska public defender’s office. The opportunity presented itself after John tried his hand at various jobs and careers in Alaska; And the fact that he was expected to play the role of a private investigator only made him that much more eager to apply his mind to the purposes of the Alaskan public defense system.

john was introduced to the pi world by his parents, who filled his young life and home with detective novels. He remembers having gone through thousands of titles of the detective genre throughout his childhood.
Finally stepping into the shoes of a private investigator quickly stripped the author of some of the romantic notions he had on paper. but john nevertheless prospered.
writing entered the scene soon after. The activity was encouraged both by John’s personal experiences in the pi field and by the books he read. When he sat down to write his first novel, John was pretty sure that the wealth of personal experiences he brought to the table would make his work stand out right away.
He was quickly proven wrong. every publisher he approached turned him down. His eventual turn of fortune can be attributed to Richard Nelson, an anthropologist and friend who told John Straley to try Soho Press.
The publisher, which was based in New York City, had a keen interest in crime fiction, and Nelson believed it would be John’s best hope of achieving his publishing dreams.
nelson was not wrong. The manuscript John sent them eventually became The Woman Who Married a Bear, her first novel. This was the same novel that Bill Clinton bought at a bookstore he visited during his tenure.
In a short time, John Straley was a successful published author with a number of critically acclaimed detective novels to his credit, most of which revolved around the character of Cecil Young.
The author retired from his pi work in 2015, but he never forgot the field. John doesn’t really write about the cases he’s worked on over the years, even though he’s had the pleasure of dealing with several high-profile clients and targets.
That said, he draws inspiration from the things he’s seen and the people he’s met.
The author’s stories begin with locations. once he has a setting, a place within which to set his story, the characters begin to take shape. he keeps a diary in which he writes down all the ideas that surprise him.
This is on top of the folders of articles, notes, and literary documents that he maintains and uses to research some of his more complicated stories. John tries to write regularly, especially when he has to complete a first draft.
don’t wait to feel inspired. the author has a certain number of words that he tries to write every day, and he never fails. Only after reaching the review stage does John take a breath and slow down.
but still, the author will spend several hours each day on the review process.

so when an ex-miner kills an Indian guide because the voices below order him to, people take notice.
but although the case seems closed, the victim’s mother refuses to let it go. She asks Cecil Young to investigate the matter and unravel the primordial conspiracy at the center of her small community.
