this is ellis’s first novel and perhaps the one that gave her the springboard she needed to catapult her career as a writer. It is one of the Wesley Peterson series. the book has received numerous positive reviews. for example, Women’s Weekly magazine rated it as one of the top ten summer reads. Merchant’s House is established in Devonshire, England. In the novel, a two-year-old boy mysteriously disappears while playing outside his cabin. the child’s mother continues with her daily routine work with indifference, oblivious to what has happened. It’s not until she goes out to be with her son that she realizes she’s gone. To her amazement, nothing is wrong and the door is also intact.

As the plot of the story unfolds, so does the mystery. a blonde woman of medium build is found murdered and her face brutally disfigured, probably in an attempt to hide her identity. she does not have any identification and also does not match the descriptions available in the missing person’s report.
The novel’s main character, Detective Sergeant Wesley Peterson, appears on the scene as the officer assigned to the case. however, it is not an easy task for the detective, since he has just been transferred to the new location. at the same time, his personal life is under pressure. his wife is on the verge of collapse due to stress related to infertility. the detective, however, keeps his head above water and tries to unravel the mystery.
The plot deepens when Wesley’s friend, an archaeologist named Neil, excavates the skeletal remains of a woman and a baby in an ancient merchant’s compound. ellis takes the reader into the story to clearly explain about the merchant. he cleverly introduces the Elizabethan family and links them to the recent murders. this is a novel definitely worth reading.

this is the first of the second kate ellis mystery series; The Joe Plantagenet Mystery Series. the plot of the story has some occult undertones. it has some aspects of satanism and even a ghost appears. The plot is set in a fictional area called Eborby in Yorkshire. brilliantly combines a mixture of mystery and history. The story revolves around Di Joe Plantagenet, who has had his fair share of misfortunes. first, he loses his wife a few months after his wedding. Then he loses his fellow police officer and partner, Kevin, in a shootout. the shooting also leaves him wounded.

In the novel there is a serial killer on the loose. the killer kills the victims using strange ways. he kidnaps the victims, puts them in a coffin and leaves them to suffocate to death. he then exhibits the corpses in a rustic cemetery. This proves challenging for Joe and his new boss Emily. they begin to suspect that it could be black magic rituals. The plot gets personal as Kevin’s daughter; carmel hennessy is shipped from leeds to north yorkshire. she naively decides to conduct her own investigations and soon realizes that she bit off more than she could chew. Kevin’s wife calls Joe and asks him to keep an eye on Carmel.
looks like emily, joe’s new boss, is also hiding something. As the plot unfolds, it becomes clear that there is more to her than meets the eye. she has so many skeletons hidden in her closet. Joe has to be on top of her game. she needs to get inside the mind of the cunning serial killer, before the killer can claim another victim.

for her contribution and effort, kate ellis has won several awards. for example, she came out ahead in 1990 to win the Northwest Playwrights Competition. in 2014 she was elected a member of the detection club. she is also a member of the crime writers association and the assassination squad. She has also been shortlisted a couple of times for the CWA short story Dagger. She was once nominated for the USA Barry Award.
conclusion
kate ellis is without a doubt a prolific writer with great writing skills. she can capture the reader’s attention and imagination, transport him back in time, and make the reader feel as if she is a character in the story. despite the fact that the novels are written as a series, a reader can start reading from any title without feeling like she is getting the short end of the stick. she therefore, it is not surprising that her novels rank among the most widely read.
