The series depicts the life story of 20-year-old Ingeborg Strand, who is destined to be a domestic helper. she had seen many men vying for her, but found none worth living with. she finds true love in a college student and her feelings for him become stronger than friendship. but, she does not get to stay with him forever and separates from her. her mother advises her to leave norway and start a new life in america. she however, does not have enough money and she is afraid to go there alone. She meets Roald Bjorklund, who is a widower and plans to go to America. he is a good, hardworking man and desperately needs a wife to take care of his young son. he seems interested in accepting ingeborg as his wife, but she doesn’t think of it as what she had prayed about love. she has to make an important decision, since many lives depend on her. The series revolves around the ups and downs in Ingeborg’s life and her tragic love life. The first novel in the series was published under the title “An Untamed Land” by Bethany House publishers in 1996. It features the main characters Ingeborg and Roald Bjorklund with interesting twists in their love lives. Ingeborg had promised not to return to Norway after moving to the United States. They are lured by the promise of free land in America and start saving every penny for their trip. After three long years, they make it to New York City in hopes of building a happy life for themselves and their children. They arrive in Dakota Territory on the banks of the Red River of the North and settle there. however, they face many difficulties and have to struggle to earn a living. they have great faith in this untamed land and hope to recover from the hardships of winter. the novel brought great appreciation for lauraine and she went on to receive the silver angel award. she completed a few more novels in the series before moving on to write another series of novels.
The second novel in the ‘Red River of the North’ series was published under the title ‘A New Day Rising’ by Bethany House Publishers in 1996. The novel continues to describe Ingeborg and Roald Bjorklund’s struggle in the Dakota Territory. His dream of owning a farm and living a happy life in America is shattered due to hardship. Things get even worse when Roald tragically disappears in the winter storm, turning Ingeborg’s life into a living nightmare. she struggles to keep her farm and her family together in the face of overwhelming pain and unhealthy circumstances. As the winter wears on, Ingeborg gets help from Roald’s distant cousin, Haaken. he takes care of the field work, while ingeborg concentrates on raising her children. she begins to feel attracted to haaken but things get complicated again when roald’s brother arrives to take care of his family. the novel was appreciated by many readers around the world. Critics also praised Lauraine Snelling for her unique writing style. Feeling motivated by the answer, she went on to write similar interesting novels over the years.
