lawrence sanders is one of the greatest and most respected authors to ever grace the face of this earth. In his time, he ranked in the same popularity rank as Danielle Steele, Stephen King, and a host of other highly revered authors whose names and works will still be remembered for centuries to come.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, on March 15, 1920, Sanders attended Wabash College after high school, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts. he then worked at macy’s department store, where he worked for a few years before joining the united states marine corps. it was not until 1946, after being discharged from the navy, that he first ventured into writing, but as a magazine editorialist.

He then quit his job to become a full-time fiction writer. his first novel was “the anderson tapes”, written in 1970 (he was then 50 years old). Basically, the novel revolves around a plot of a group of criminals trying to rob a luxurious apartment building. The book earned Sanders his first prize, in 1971, when the Mystery Writers of America voted the author with the best first novel. Before his death (February 7, 1998), Sander had more than 50 million copies of the books he wrote in print. that makes him one of the most popular and successful novelists of all time.
Sanders is best remembered for the second book he wrote, The First Deadly Sin—the first book in the Deadly Sins series. Written in 1973, the book was adopted into a film produced and agitated by Frank Sinatra. The film also features some of the great actors of the ’70s and ’80s, including Faye Dunaway (star of Boney and Clyde), David Dukes, Brenda Vaccaro, Martin Gabel and James Whitmore, as well as Bruce Willis in the feature film debut.
In short, the book revolves around a well-dressed man who stalks and terrorizes the upper-class neighborhoods of New York. armed with an ice ax, the man appears to take aim at strangers. He must be stopped by a cop named Captain Ed Delaney, the main character who amuses himself by solving bizarre murder cases that are beyond logic.
At the beginning of the first chapter we are introduced to Daniel Blank, a successful young man who works for a publisher. he is also a skilled mountain climber.

Daniel, as we are told, is a cold man who would not settle for anything less than order. he’s filthy rich and owns the best clothes, furniture, cars and, well, anything anyone in his time could dream of owning.
Her close friends include Samuel Morton and Florence, two strange new Yokers with close ties to Daniel. Florence introduces Dan to Cecilia Montfort and the two start dating. It turns out that Cecilia lives in Butler with a stranger named Valender and a 12-year-old boy named Tony, who is also homosexual and claims to be her brother.
we are introduced to edward delaney in the second section of the book. he is the man in charge of the 251st precinct, new york. his wife turns out to be very ill and admitted. he is forced to take a sudden leave of absence from her work to be with her in the hospital.
It is during this time that someone is murdered in new york and edward is in charge of investigating the case in secret.
there’s no question daniel is the killer (considering he has some kind of weird fetish for killing men for sexual gratification). but there seems to be little or no evidence to incriminate him.
the book is full of all kinds of weird sexual relationships between daniel, cecilia and tony. sanders goes out on a limb here to vividly describe everything that goes on behind the curtains of her bedroom (what a dirty old man!).
In the second book in the series, The Second Deadly Sins, the first chapter begins by reporting the death of a celebrated artist named Victor Maitland, who was found stabbed to death repeatedly in the back in his Mott Street studio. there are no clear leads or main suspect. Therefore, the New York Police Department is forced to call the now-retired Captain Edwards for help.

Even though he’s still adjusting to his outside life, edward is excited to get back to work now that his outside life seemed super boring. he’s excited to once again put his honed investigative skills to the test.
But first, he has to plunge into Maitland’s rarefied orbit by retracing his steps. she has to retrace the winding path of greed, fraud, deception and, well, everything else that might have had anything to do with his murder.
Delaney uncovers a long list of suspects, including Maitland’s wife, son and, surprisingly, mistress. A second murder rocks Manhattan, bringing him even closer to the truth. it is then that he has a clear idea of what kind of monster he really was victor. but still, he has to find out who among the long chain of enemies and fore-enemies of his really killed him. that’s where the mystery begins.
Here, we are presented with all the possibilities that the killer is actually a woman, which makes the second book even more interesting. sanders fixes the whole story when he gets delaney to argue with his wife about women’s liberation. Though he doesn’t help, considering the killer suffers from a rare Addison’s disease and also has to deal with the Crimson Curse, he does make the story a bit interesting and fascinating.
The book becomes more interesting as one continues reading until it reaches a point where it becomes a required ending. As it seems, Sanders was more interested in producing another bestseller or perhaps surpassing the first book in the series. And while some reviewers have pointed out that the book would have been more interesting if he [Sanders] had chosen to explore the idea of nosebleeds and bleeding in Australia, the book is still a great read and one that I would always want to revisit. after finishing the last chapter.
Okay, all the books in the series keep getting better with each subsequent release, although most people have singled out the third book, the third deadly sin, as the best in the series.
