lewis carroll was the pseudonym of charles lutwidge dodgson born in 1832 died in 1898. was an english mathematician, writer, anglican deacon, logician and photographer. His prolific writings include Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking Glass. he is also known for his facility with logic, puns, and fantasy.
the carroll family was mainly from the north of england but had irish connections. Most of her male ancestors were Church of England clergymen or army officers. His great-grandfather has risen through the ranks of the church and later became Bishop of Elphin. His grandfather served as a captain in the army, but died in the line of duty for him in Ireland in 1803.

carroll attended westminster school and then joined christ church in oxford. he resolved to follow another family tradition and vowed to take holy orders. he had a talent for mathematics and earned a double first degree that could have led to an excellent academic career. In 1830, Carroll married Frances Jane Lutwidge and later became a parish priest.
carroll was born in cheshire, near the towns of runcorn and warrington. he was the eldest son but the third child of a marriage of four and a half years. When Carroll was 11, his father was brought to life in Croft-on-Tees in North Yorkshire, and the whole family moved into the large rectory. this became his home for the next two and a half decades. His father was a Conservative but an active clergyman in the Church of England who was later promoted to Archdeacon of Richmond and was sometimes active in the disputes that were at the core of the church’s split.
During his early youth, Carroll was educated at home. At the age of seven, he actively read books such as Pilgrim’s Progress. He had a stutter, a condition shared by most of his siblings, and this mainly influenced his social life throughout his years. When he was 12 years old, he went to Richmond Elementary School. In 1846, Carroll joined the rugby school, but this made him unhappy, as his writings a few years after leaving the school illustrate.
He left rugby and, in May 1850, joined Oxford as a member of his father’s old college, Christ Church. Unfortunately, he had only been in Oxford for only two days before he was called home after his mother died at the age of 47.
His early academic career was torn between irresistible distraction and great promise. he was exceptionally talented and didn’t always have to work hard for him to achieve something. He earned first-class honors in mathematics in 1852 and was later nominated for a student by Edward Pusey, an old friend of his father.

later in 185 he received a first class honors degree in school of mathematics with final honors. his mathematical ingenuity earned carroll the christ church… a professorship he continued to hold for the next two and a half decades.
From a young age, Carroll wrote short stories and poetry and contributed primarily to Mischmasch, a family magazine. Between 1854 and 1856, his work appeared in such national publications as The Train and Comic Times, as well as in minor magazines such as the Oxford Critic and the Whitby Gazette. In 1856, Carroll published a work under a pseudonym that would make him famous. He published a romantic poem titled Loneliness using Lewis Carroll as a pseudonym.
Carroll’s first book was Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, published in 1865. It was the first novel in the Alice in Wonderland series of five books. Other stand-alone stories Carroll wrote include Bruno’s Revenge (1867), The Hunt for the Snark (1876), and A Tangled Tale (1885).
In 1856, Carroll took up a new art form, photography, deeply influenced by his uncle Skeffington Lutwidge and later by Reginald Southey. By the time he stopped photographing, he had already set up his studio on tom quad and had created approximately 3,000 images. he stopped taking pictures simply because it was time consuming.
to make letter writing easier, carroll invented what came to be known as wonderland…….stamp box in the year 1889. this invention was a folder made of cloth that had 12 slots. The folder was then placed in a slipcase and decorated with a photo of Alice on the front, and a photo of the Cheshire Cat on the back.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
Alice chases a rabbit and suddenly falls into wonderland. once she sets foot in wonderland, she comes across a small door, and through this door, she can see an attractive garden that she sincerely wants to explore. However, as the door is too small for her, Alice comes across a table with an unknown drink, but after examining it, she realizes that it makes her shrink and from there it becomes a comedy of some errors, as Alice cringes but is still unable to access the beautiful little garden.
