Lilian Jackson Braun was one of America’s foremost authors, known for writing light-hearted novels based on the mystery and suspense genres. she is mainly remembered for her thrilling mystery novels, the “the cat who…” series.
lilian was born on june 20, 1913 in willimansett, chicopee falls, massachusetts, united states, and died on june 4, 2011. her famous cat novels whose series revolves around the life of james qwilleran, a former reporter newspaper, and a pair of his Siamese cats named yum yum and koko.

The series is set in the fictional small town of Pickax, which is located in Moose County. lilian has described the place as being about 400 miles north of everywhere.
The counties, towns, and lifestyles of her characters depicted in the series bear a strong resemblance to Bad Axe, Michigan, where Lilian used to live, along with her husband, for several years until the 1980s. However, she has never indicated any resemblance to such a place. Many of her readers also believe that she has represented the history and culture of the Michigan Upper Peninsula in her novels.
Lilian Jackson began her writing career as a teenager. At the time, she used to contribute sports stories to Detroit News. She later went on to work as a copywriter for several department stores in Detroit. This was followed by a job at the Detroit Free Press. There, she remained as editor for a period of 30 years, retiring in 1978.
while still working as an editor at free press, lilian began work on her famous mystery series. in fact, she published the first three novels in the series between 1966 and 1968, to critical acclaim. Following the success of her first novels, Lilian was named New York Times New Detective of the Year.

after that period, he disappeared for a period of 18 years from the mystery novel publishing scene due to the fact that mystery novels would begin to focus on sex, foul language, and violence at that time. Because of this, Lilian’s later novels were not appreciated in the changing market for the mystery genre.
So, it was in 1986 that Berkley Publishing successfully reintroduced Lilian to mystery readers. Berkley published their newest addition to the Cat Who series and over the next 2 years, they published four more novels. they also reprinted his earlier novels.
Lilian’s novels once again began to become instant bestsellers and this motivated her to complete a total of 29 books in the series. When it came to her personal life, she liked to keep it private.
The first novel in the series was published by Berkley Trade in 1966. It was titled “The Cat Who Could Read Upside Down.” The plot of the novel takes place in the fictional town of Pickax in Moose County, United States. In the novel’s opening sequence, Jim Qwilleran is shown as a former award-winning reporter who has disappeared from the field for a short time. he returns to the scene with a job as editor of the fluxion newspaper, in the art section.
The paper’s art critic, George Bonifield Mountclemens, has a habit of writing scathing and invariably scathing reviews of local shows, despite being an accredited critic. he is also known to convey his views through a messenger. he lives alone, with only a cat named koko.
Although he lives alone, his house is luxuriously furnished and situated in a dilapidated neighborhood where he is believed to have several enemies, as well as others scattered throughout the city. George offers Jim a small apartment in her building at a very nominal rent, which she grabs with both hands. but then she realizes that the deal also included taking care of cats.
Another character named Earl Lambreth is introduced, who is described as the owner of a gallery, where George gives happier treatments to the artists. he on one occasion praises the painting of an artist he likes to call himself a cosist.

Shortly thereafter, Jim Qwilleran and Koko find the body of George Mountclemens in his backyard. with the multiple deaths in a short space of time, the plot of the novel takes a mysterious and exciting turn.
The second novel in the Cat Who series by Lilian Jackson Braun was published by Headline Publishing in 1967. The plot takes place in the same place as the first novel in the series and continues to feature the same set of main characters.
In the opening sequence of the second novel, Jim Qwilleran isn’t too overwhelmed after receiving his new assignment at the Fluxion Journal. he has never liked the subject of interior design and now he is asked to write an entire magazine on it every week. his distaste for the specialty of interior design is also known by his colleagues.
somehow jim completes the first issue of gracious abodes magazine, which features the interior design of a luxurious residence. The magazine is barely off the press when Jim finds himself in another murder mystery.
It is revealed that the exclusive residence Jim featured in his magazine is robbed and the owner is found dead. Now Jim Qwilleran, along with his Siamese partner Koko, must carry out the investigation on their own and find the real killer.
Shortly thereafter, Koko begins to unearth some crucial clues by sniffing out designer furniture from the stolen house. The mystery becomes yet another feature for Jim Qwilleran, as he attempts to track down a clever killer.
