aylesford’s skull by james p blaylock (a story of langdon st. ives #1)

aylesford’s skull is a work of art for me. james pag blaylock has created a truly magical story, where most authors who write steampunk opt for a direction of a more bold and brash steampunk environment, he takes another route by writing a more or less ordinary story but elevating it with hints of steampunk and a supernatural aspect. On it. to me it’s a truly magnificent example of how to take a story to the next level. it’s a great story all round punctuated by just enough hints of steampunk and magic.

shadow ops: fortress frontier by myke cole (shadow ops series: book 2)

Okay, I’m almost done talking. fortress frontier is an excellent book, one that hits all the right notes for me. There may be some people for whom this type of book won’t work, military jargon may be a bit off-putting for others, but for those who like action-packed military fantasy, you’re in for a treat.

beyond the veil by tim marquitz (demon squad: book 5)

With Beyond the Veil, Marquitz holds up the Demon Squad series among the Dresden Files, Iron Druid Chronicles, and Sandman Slim as some of the best urban fantasies available. while the series has moved away from joy and toward darkness, it hasn’t affected the entertainment value these books provide. magic + bullets + explosions = fun. If you like the series I mentioned above, then I think you will also like the Demon Squad series, especially Beyond the Veil.

the shining girls of lauren beukes

There are so many questions that lead you to dark places including: how does someone make the decision to kill people? Can a first death be an accident? Does violence always escalate? Lauren Beukes has turned the gritty into the fantastical in a well-thought-out story set against the backdrop of Chicago through the ages. if you don’t like realistic violence you may not want to read this as the book is not for the faint hearted, but if you do read it you will be rewarded with a journey that will leave you guessing at the end. until the last page!

david sandner and jacob weisman’s treasury of the fantastic

ryan: the treasury of the fantastic is an incredible collection of 44 poems, short stories, and novels, all related to fantasy, all published before 1923. kudos to the anthology’s editors, david sandner and jacob weisman, for managing to collect the rights to so many amazing stories. at the beginning of the book they openly provide the criteria they used to put together this anthology. Unfortunately, their criteria mean we miss out on some great authors who were producing their best work around the cut data, authors like Lovecraft and Howard, but that hardly takes away from the excellent 44 stories that made the cut and are celebrated in this anthology.

scott lynch’s republic of thieves (the bastard knight sequence: book 3)

Republic of Thieves isn’t the explosive return many people are probably expecting, but it’s still one of the best books I’ve read this year. there are issues with the pacing and ambition of the plot, but for me the characterization more than makes up for it. welcome back, scott lynch. I can’t wait to see what happens to these characters next.

ryan: An intimate trip down memory lane to a time when things were much more fantastical than they are now. this is a story that is simple on the surface, but with a depth of immersion that depends entirely on how much you connect with the story. I guess the further you get from your childhood, either by age or experience, the more you will connect with this story and the more you will fall in love with it.

helene wecker’s golem and djinni

Helene Wecker writes elegantly and fluently, her characters are constantly fascinating, and exploring her stories is a joy. The main setting and narrative evoke wonderful images of 19th century New York and we, as lucky readers, get to experience the Jewish and Arab folklore central to the book’s being. many authors have written about a golem, many have written about a djinni, but few have brought the two together in such a seamless story. The Golem and the Djinni is top-tier historical fantasy fiction that always delights; a charming love story with a nice emotional depth.

the screaming ladder by jonathan stroud (lockwood & co #1)

the five books that make up lockwood & co series are so good that I am currently rereading all of them. I also consider the Bartimaeus trilogy and the stand-alone novel The Heroes of the Valley to be among the best fantasy books I’ve ever read. the most enjoyable fantasy books always provide the reader with a healthy dose of wish fulfillment. i think this was key to the success of the harry potter books and the chronicles of narnia before that and one of the greatest strengths of lockwood & co. it is that readers will wish they could live inside the book; After all, what teenager wouldn’t want to live in a huge old house, taking care of themselves with no adults to boss them around? and then at night they strap on a rapier and go out to fight the restless dead… who wouldn’t get a little excited at the prospect of being a full-time ghost hunter? In the world of Stroud, it’s the kids who have the power, not the adults.

mc scott’s art of war (rome: book 4)

The novel is what I expected from Manda Scott. it is different in style than her previous outing with panther. Personally, I prefer this style. the next will inevitably be different again. For those of you who like action over incense, like swordsmanship over oratory (i.e. those who would prefer Ben Kane over Stephanie Dray), then this is for you. it’s a great book read it.

controlled by kim curran (turn series #2)

control improves in all aspects of the turn, as a good sequel is supposed to do. He was a little slow in the middle, but Curran seriously hit the end out of the ball park. the biggest problem for me will be the wait for the third book, delete (yes, the titles of the books are change, control and delete, how cool is that!).

anthony ryan’s blood song (shadow of the raven: book 1)

jjoshua: beautifully written, wonderfully acted and populous, anthony ryan seems to be establishing himself as one of the next master storytellers. the characters are brilliant, at the same time interesting and, despite their age, attractive to readers of any age. his feats of strength are realistic, his stamina and abilities are crude and limited, and his growth during the first half of the book is slow. His mentors and teachers are fleeting, yet important, and obviously more than meets the young eyes of our protagonist.

senlin rises by josiah bancroft (the books of babel #1)

an extraordinary debut that is well worth the attention. A wonderfully written and highly engaging masterpiece in which I was on Tom’s side every step of the way. This isn’t the most action-packed show, but the way Bancroft is presented, with slower moments and interlocking emotional flashbacks, the more action-oriented scenes pack a punch. especially the ending. the future possibilities seem staggering with the way things have concluded. the ending convinced me that it was definitely a 10 star read.

countdown city explores issues and asks the questions every good dystopian work should ask: how would people behave? what would happen to society? Would the stores still be open? would food be readily available? Simply put, how long would it be before civilization completely collapsed? but the question that I think is more pertinent to each individual reader is: what would you do in these circumstances?
