Top 10 Horror Novels of 2015 – Horror Novel Reviews

written by: matt molgaard

sadly i only read about 25 novels in 2015. the calendar is speeding up and the family is growing. A new business is being outlined and planned for launch in 2016. It has been a hectic 2015. All that said, out of the 25 books I’ve read, I’ve found some genuine masterpieces. From some of the names I’ve come to trust to some new discoveries, enough wonderful works were published this year to comfortably put together a solid top 10 list for you.

You are reading: List of 2015 horror books

this list may have been a little less predictable, and may very well have included some names you’re not used to seeing here, but unfortunately, when i went to facebook to call out the hnr contributors for their top picks from the year, I have crickets. nothing in regards to the entrance. therefore this list comes directly from your server with almost zero input (sadly) from the hnr team.

If I chose a work of fiction that you hate, please refrain from bombarding my inbox with hate mail. I’ve had enough of that about angry directors getting less than favorable reviews.

ronald malfi – girls: ronal malfi continues his habit of chilling readers to the bone. heck, this one seeps through the bone and swims into the marrow. A bit of gothic sentiment runs through the book, but whether gothic readings are your thing or not, the girls will probably scare the hell out of you and strike a melancholy nerve. there is real sadness in this story, and there are also real scares. malfi seems to get a little better with every outing, and that only makes us wonder where the man will be in a few years; his fiction is already first class, elitist and attractive. little girls is a winner from start to finish.

tim lebbon – the silence: tim lebbon’s approach to post-apocalyptic horror is unique in many different ways. first, this one isn’t full of cliche zombies. It is not an open war of the wild survivors of the world. It’s basically nothing you’d expect from a book that’s (basically) about the end of the world. instead, it’s something of a monster story with a magnetic and versatile lineup of leads. these are the leads we love, and the way lebbon handles this material is absolutely brilliant.

Hunter Shea – The Dover Devil: Well, earlier this year I ranked Forbidden Island as my favorite Hunter Shea novel of 2015. Then I strained my eyes, tearing through the pages of the dover demon on my phone during a recent business trip. the nagging headaches and bouts of vertigo were worth it. this is hunter shea doing what hunter shea does best: creating chilling monster stories with memorable and likeable characters. Another excellent read that I promise to check out soon here at HNR, The Dover Demon is further proof that Shea’s books should be right up there with Stephen King and Dean Koontz, the industry leaders.

guillermo del toro & daniel kraus – trollhunters: I can’t make you understand how much I enjoyed this book in one paragraph. why? because the novel is as close to perfection as it gets these days. trollhunters is going to appeal to young and old audiences alike, and has an impressive amblin entertainment vibe. buy this book, read this book… and then read it again. It’s amazing in every way imaginable!

lee mcgeorge – the thing: day zero: lee mcgeorge is quickly making its way onto my list of must-read authors. Coming soon he has a new stellar feature on the infamous Slender Man (you’ll see a review surface in the very near future!), a prequel to John Carpenter’s classic 1982 film. the story is true to the picture, you know, but it gives us a great insight into what happened before r.j. maready found his butt in a serious bind. brilliant, brilliant fan fiction.
