I got this as a text for a class and kept it for use for myself and some teachers. It is well written, easy to follow and helps you understand what is appropriate for YA to read. They change the edition about every 2 years to keep current and that”s probably the best part. without having read this book I would think several “classics” from the 70″s should be on her list. I would have missed out on knowing this generation, their issues and the books/media that”s available. Even new techniques, (WebQuests?), for teaching YA critical thinking and learning skills. I will pass this one on and buy the both edition when it comes out because there will be new information already.

I think the book is great in all that it incorporates. It goes into great detail and lists a tremendous amount of information and books from which teachers new to librarianship at the high school level; however, $150 is a huge amount to pay for a book that will be obsolete with it”s recommended titles as soon as new ones come along. I wholeheartedly recommend it to someone not familiar with young adult literature, but for an experienced someone who currently works in that field, it”s a large amount of money for this knowledge. I am really glad that I only rented it. 🙂
$100 to rent this book is insane. Not worth it to me but had to have it for a class so I had to have it.
I”ve found this text to be a great resource for quality, young adult literature. Its biggest drawback is that it is impossible for such a text to remain current as new materials are published each year. However, for a basic go-to, it is worth having.
This book is a good resource for English teachers to use when choosing and assigning different books to read. It is definitely worth the money.
