mary balogh wrote her first historical romance in 1983. that book, a hoax in disguise, was published by signet in 1985 and won a regency romantic times award for best new writer. Since then, she has written over 100 novels and numerous novellas, most famously the slightly best-selling New York Times series that follows the ever-scheming Bedwyn brothers; and the simple series, which follows four female teachers at the miss martin school for girls in bath, england.
As a result of her incredible writing career, she has won many awards over the years, including the Borders group’s all-time bestseller of the year, several Waldenbooks awards, two B. Dalton Awards and a Romantic Times Lifetime Achievement Award. Her novel, Simply Magic, was a quill award finalist.

She was born Mary Jenkins in 1944 in post-war Swansea, Wales, UK, a city that had been heavily bombed and was still under rationing for part of her childhood. Although material possessions were few and life was sometimes difficult, Ella Mary had an overall idyllic childhood, in part due to her active imagination.
When she and her older sister, Moira, were little, they had a collection of dolls that they always played with. It was while creating stories about these dolls that Mary first discovered her love of storytelling. she and moira filled notebooks with stories and talked about how they would one day become famous authors.

Before Mary Jenkins became the famous author, Mary Balogh decided to become a teacher as it was a practical goal. After graduating from college, she accepted a two-year teaching contract in the small town of Prairie in Saskatchewan, Canada. Halfway through her contract, she met her future husband, Robert Balogh.
after getting married, mary and robert settled in the town of kipling, saskatchewan, where mary continued to work as a teacher, eventually rising to the level of principal. They have three children and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
During Mary’s early marriage and early motherhood, she was a busy woman who worked full-time as a teacher, a devoted mother, and a wife, but she always clung to the dream of being an author. when she first read a georgette heyer novel, which are well-known regency novels, she was enchanted and transported back in time. At that moment, she knew that when she became a writer, it would be the romance and intrigue of Regency England that she wanted to write about.
She finally got the chance to start writing when her youngest daughter, Sian, was six years old. It wasn’t always easy trying to fit writing a novel between teaching and the general duties that come with being a wife and mother, but she managed to write a masked hoax by hand at her dining room table. p>
With disguised deception, Mary Balogh did an incredible job of bringing the characters to life, creating a version of Regency England that could easily have been taken from a day in the life of Jane Austen. It’s a story full of intrigue, as the 7th Earl of Brampton has an illicit affair with a passionate woman he meets at a masquerade ball. her relationship with her is a way of escaping from margaret wells, the seemingly bored wife he was forced to marry.
margaret wells wears a mask to trick her husband into falling in love with her personality as a passionate woman on the dance floor. following the emotional upheavals as these characters find their way through the social mores of the early 19th century while trying to follow their own hearts and desires is a delightful experience. it’s clear why a masked hoax won the award it did and remains a popular book.

something balogh does very well is create characters that people can relate to, even though the books take place in a very different time period from modern times. regency england can sometimes be seen as a time of rigid social structure and extreme excess on the part of the aristocrats, but balogh manages to create less than feminine characters and turn them into heroines we relate to and support.
Throughout the balogh books there are fallen or ruined courtesans and women along with the traditional aristocrats who commonly grace historical fiction from this period. This juxtaposition of characters can best be seen in his series Slightly, which follows the six wealthy Bedwyn brothers and sisters. Although they are very rich, they are certainly all flawed, but only in the fact that they are human like the rest of us. not only are they human, but they fall in love with unlikely characters throughout the series through a series of interesting events.
In the first book in the series, Slightly Married, the Bedwyn who marries is Aidan, the second son, who marries after making a promise to a dear friend who was on his deathbed. the woman he marries is not only very independent and doesn’t need protection, but she lives on a farm where she takes care of orphans and other down on her luck. Characters like that ultimately draw readers in and keep them coming back for more.
balogh manages to consistently create stories that are totally unique despite taking place in a time that much is written about. he also does a fantastic job of interweaving the lives of his characters throughout his different novels, making it seem like they are historical documents rather than stories of a truly grand imagination.
the series slightly is clearly a bedwyn saga, with each brother having their own novel entirely dedicated to them, but reading other novels of theirs, such as a summer to remember, the bedwyns, along with other supporting characters, can being that they are in the background as secondary characters. this kind of imaginative story line makes it impossible not to want to read all the novels balogh has published.
