Matthew Pearl first became interested in the poet when he took a class on Dante while studying at Harvard for his undergraduate degree. Pearl was then studying American and English literature, but he was so fascinated with Dante that for a time he considered changing his major to study Romance languages. but such a radical step would have meant that he would not graduate in the time he wanted. instead, lino pertile, his teacher, suggested that he write his thesis on the “dante club”. His work was so good that the Dante Society of America awarded him the Dante Award for his efforts.

At Yale, her fascination with Dante kept coming back and midway through her degree she began writing a novel inspired by the “Dante Club.” she wrote about the founding of the members, its modern iteration and what she was up to. Some of the things she wrote about were how she helped Longfellow create the debut translation of Dante’s Divine Comedy. Pearl’s work was the background to a murder mystery in which the methods of punishment were inspired by what Dante wrote awaits the sinner in “hell.” since they were the most familiar with the job, it was the club members at the time who had the difficult task of finding the killer. pearl uses comic relief by laughing at the idea that some academics might investigate and solve some gruesome homicides. pearl has said that in writing the novel he intended to recreate the most extraordinary components of dante. he wanted the “dante club” to go through a confrontational journey of evil and violence.
