The novel was a huge success and helped Hayder establish her writing career by motivating her to write many other suspense novels. The book became an international bestseller as readers around the world enjoyed reading the unique content of the beautifully written novel by author Hayder.

The next installment in the series also became a huge success, going on to appear on the Sunday Times bestseller list, as well as helping author Hayder win the WH Smith Good Read Award in 2002. Even the third installment in the Jack Caffery series was on the Sunday Times bestseller list.

Before becoming an accomplished author of crime thrillers, Mo Hayder had dropped out of school at the age of 15. her fall forced her to take on a series of odd jobs, including working as a security guard, hostess, and waitress in a club as well as making movies.

Later, she worked as an English teacher in Asian countries and was also an educational administrator. After a lapse of several years, Ella Hayder returned to complete her studies, earning her Master’s degree in Filmmaking at a University of America, located in Washington DC.

Along with that, Hayder also completed her Masters course in Creative Writing from Bath Spa University in the UK. As Hayder’s debut novel, Birdman was published in 2000, many people found it extremely disturbing and violent due to the detailed description of the methods used by a serial killer to kill his victims. however, it was still successful to great acclaim and much praise. The novel is the first to feature the character of Detective Inspector Jack Caffery. In the second novel in the series, Jack is depicted as trying to tackle pedophilia.

In the opening sequence of the novel, AMIP, which is the top assassin squad of the metropolitan borough of Greenwich in south-east London, is called in by the city’s cid detectives to an unsettling spectacle to investigate multiple murders. the squad discovers the bodies of five women of similar ages who were ritually murdered. the killer had dumped the women’s corpses on the moor near the dome of the city.

Observing the disturbing body images of the victims, investigators concluded that they were on the trail of one of the most dangerous sexual serial killers of all time. This novel is also set in London and continues to depict the busy life of Detective Inspector Jack Caffery around the crimes that occur in the city. In the opening plot of the novel, a husband and wife couple find themselves in squalid conditions in an unfamiliar house on a quiet, residential street near Brockwell Park in South London during the height of summer. they have been beaten continuously by someone who has also dehydrated them a lot. as a result, the husband appears to be about to die. however, what is even more shocking is that his youngest child has disappeared. di jack caffery is called in to investigate the case as he is one of the best investigative officers in the amip squad. Upon investigation, Jack discovers that the case bears many similarities to events that happened in his past. and this makes it difficult for him to concentrate on the case. As he tries to dig deeper into the case, he realizes that he is having a hard time keeping disturbing realities of his past and present. But, the real nightmare is about to begin in Di Jack Caffery’s life, as it looks like it’s going to have even more dangerous effects on his life.
