Paulo Coelho is a Portuguese writer and lyricist who was born on August 24, 1947 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He is undoubtedly one of the most successful authors of his time having sold over 200 million copies of his books in at least 150 countries around the world. his first book, Hell Files, was published when he was 35 years old; did not receive much praise. In 1987 he published the pilgrimage detailing his spiritual awakening in Spain. however, it was his book, the alchemist, that finally made him internationally famous. He has received many honors for his books and was hailed by the Guinness Book of World Records as the most translated book by a living author.
Coelho was raised by devout Catholic parents and at the age of 17, with the rebellious nature and determination of any teenager, he expressed his ambition to become a writer. His parents felt that a writer was nowhere near what was considered a proper occupation in Brazil at the time. his mother was particularly concerned about the fact that paulo coelho’s father was an engineer. It was this steadfast and unwavering ambition that essentially got him committed to a mental institution by his parents, and not once but three times (Coelho managed to escape twice). Paulo Coelho has always maintained that his parents had his best interests at heart and that he absolved them of the position they took on him. he was discharged from the mental institution at the age of 20.
coelho later enrolled in law school, a decision influenced by his parents, but then dropped out. his life thereafter very much reflected the hippie nature of the 1970s, where he indulged in drugs, rock and roll and sex. she also became interested in traveling the world. in that period he dedicated himself to other professions besides writing, a vocation to which he would later come to pay attention in his later years.

Ever since his first book, The Pilgrimage, Paulo Coelho indicates a kind of spiritual awakening within him that took place when he walked on a Catholic pilgrimage of more than 500 miles along the road to Santiago de Compostela in 1986. Paulo Coelho’s best-selling novel to date, and a modern classic among the must-reads of the century, was written over two weeks of creativity. coelho has always detailed that the book was already written in his soul, hence the speed with which he wrote the entire novel.
The book is about an Andalusian shepherd who finds a treasure beyond his wildest imagination as he embarks on a mystical quest that takes him through the desert and with various encounters, including an alchemist. the boy initially has a recurring dream in which a boy instructs him to look for treasure at the bottom of the Egyptian pyramids. It is this that makes him meet strange mystical characters, namely; a gypsy woman, a mysterious old man named Melquisedec and the alchemist, who urge him to fulfill his destiny.
The story has a twist in its ending where the treasure detailed in his dreams found at the bottom of the Egyptian pyramids ends up in the sycamore tree where the boy used to take refuge from when tending his sheep. all of this is embedded in what the book calls “the language of the world” and the child’s initial quest to find worldly goods becomes a discovery of the treasure within himself. it also emphasizes a person living in the present as opposed to the future or the past. by doing so, we can find ourselves and achieve inner peace in the process as well.
the alchemist became a worldwide phenomenon and was also translated into different languages around the world. As a result of the enormous success of The Alchemist, Coelho dedicated himself to publishing two books at the rate of two years; a strategy that has since served him well, as all of his books after The Alchemist have sold over 65 million copies and have been translated into 59 different languages.
veronika decides to die (1998)

This book is about a young woman named Veronika. the protagonist is illustrated as a woman who has everything in her life, boyfriends, a pretty appearance, a loving and caring family and a stable job. everything any woman her age would want. this would imply at a minimum that she should be a happy woman with the kind of life she leads. However, this is not the case. Ella Veronika is not happy with her life and, as a result, one morning she takes an overdose of sleeping pills. She wakes up in a mental institution where she is told that her heart is irreparable and that she only has a few days left to live.
What follows next is an intense follow-up to the protagonist’s days in the world and how she shifts to a completely different perspective on life and the world. As with most of coelho’s works, the story is uplifting and reminds the reader that every moment is special and precious in our lives.
