When we build phonological awareness, we focus on sounds and play with those sounds. therefore, it makes perfect sense to pair reading alouds with our phonological awareness work. So, let’s take a look at some amazing books that can help us develop phonological awareness.

use almost any book for phonological awareness work
You really can take almost any reading aloud and use it to do some phonological awareness work. that’s how it’s done.
- Gross Motor Differences: Choose a sentence from a book. a book that has repeating lines works especially well, but it can really be any sentence. we go with “run, run, as fast as you can”. Repeat the sentence with students and ask them to hold up one finger for each word in the sentence. by the time they finish saying this sentence, they will have 7 fingers up.
- Isolated Sound Work: Have students isolate the beginning sounds of the names of the characters in the book. if you are reading a maisy book, students can isolate the /m/ in maisy’s name or /t/ in tallulah’s name. you could also do some middle and end sound work.
- segmentation of words into syllables: character names work great here too. clap the syllables in the names of the characters in the story. if you’re reading evelyn del rey moves, clap evelyn’s name and you’ll clap three times.

A Quokka for the Queen by Huw Lewis Jones is the story of a queen who receives a quokka for her birthday. She then decides to send gifts to everyone and, with the help of the quokka, they come up with many possibilities based on the initial sound of each recipient. the baker could have a buffalo or a beaver. teachers can enjoy turtles, toucans or maybe tarantulas. (initial sounds)
an oldie but goodie is the famine, by jan slepian and ann seidler, is the story of a monster who confuses the initial sounds of things he would like to eat. for example, he orders “pie pie” when he wants “meat pie”. it’s a fun learning nonsense waiting to happen. (phoneme substitution)

did you take the b from my _ook? by beck and matt stanton is a fun book to work on the initial sound /b/, deletion and substitution. students will laugh and shout the answers. (deletion/addition of phonemes)
the word collector by peter h. Reynolds is the story of the pleasure of collecting words. and those words are perfect candidates for segmenting word syllables and classifying those words by the number of syllables. (syllable segmentation)
