chapter 1

This better be the right brothel.

It didn’t look like the seedier brothels I’d been to recently. this three-story structure could pass as the meeting place for an elite social club. Despite its unexpected beauty, if I were to make it through another meat festival only to return empty-handed, I wouldn’t be responsible for what I did to my prey when I finally found it.

To vent my irritation from weeks of fruitless searching, I kicked the door open. courtesy had been wasted in recent establishments anyway. No smart owner ever voluntarily gave up a high-paying client, and I’ll say one thing for the brothel-loving vampire he was looking for: he obviously paid well.

To my surprise, I didn’t see anyone in the elegant lobby. brothels used to have several prostitutes at the entrance to welcome new customers. I was even more surprised when I heard no sounds of carnal activity coming from the upper floors of the house. I took out my mobile and checked the gps pin. yes, this was the right place. Plus, it certainly smelled like sex, once you got past the suffocating smells of various perfumes and colognes.

but where was everyone?

weak vibrations on the floor made me walk towards the corridor. oh, so the party must be downstairs. I followed the stronger scents of perfume until I found a stairway that went down two floors. it ended in a locked door which I also kicked in. there’s no point in being picky now.

the noise exploded. the basement must have been soundproofed for me to miss it sooner. now, he wished he couldn’t hear what was going on. a boisterous chorus assaulted my ears, repeating itself over and over again. thunder and flames, the favorite opening song of the old barnum and bailey circus.

and I had walked into a circus, now I saw it, albeit one without real animals. about a dozen naked women and men frolicked on the floor, making woefully inadequate impressions of the creatures his full-body painting depicted. no work ethic, I thought when three fake lions seemed more interested in petting than more realistic fights for dominance, and don’t get me started on how they ignored the two fake gazelles walking past them.

The dozen clown-clad prostitutes showed more dedication to their roles. they emerged from a fake car in the far corner of the room, some falling forward in rolling somersaults once they emerged, some bumping into each other with comical exaggeration, and some blowing up balloons on explicit body parts which they then graphically connected.

an eruption of fireworks drew my attention to the other side of the room. they revolved around what looked like a throne, haloing its occupant in a blaze of sparks, fire, and smoke. the mini pyrotechnic display was so bright that he couldn’t make out the enthroned person’s face, but when he yelled, “now the eighth act will begin!” I heard a distinctive English accent.

Then the smoke cleared enough to reveal a tall man wearing a blue circus ringleader’s jacket. the smoke still hid him from the waist down, but I didn’t need to see any further to know that he had finally found my target. the vampire who had blazed a trail through a dozen brothels in just two weeks had a face as beautiful as an angel’s, not to mention that her fire-and-shadow hair was as distinctive as his appearance. When he stepped down from the throne, revealing that he wasn’t wearing anything under his chieftain jacket, I realized that those weren’t Ian’s only notable attributes.

For a moment, I stared. What vampire in his right mind would pierce himself with silver there?

I was the only one surprised by the silver piercing on the tip of ian’s cock. everyone else stopped what they were doing and ran towards him. even the glitter-covered acrobats leapt from their swaying perches near the ceiling, landing gracefully near the mound of limbs now forming around the red-haired vampire.

It wasn’t enough that he was saddled with a vampire so mentally deficient that he had willingly given himself a case of perpetual dick burn. he, too, had to be depraved enough to indulge in carnival-themed orgies. he wasn’t going to find out what the rest of act eight entailed. I made my way over to the growing pile of meat and started throwing people to the side, being careful not to throw them too hard. their heartbeats meant they were human, so they couldn’t be healed in the same way as my kind.

“what is this?” Ian asked annoyed when I got to the end of the bodies. then he let out a thankful noise when I picked him up without the care I had shown the other people.

“well hello my sweet strong blonde”. now he didn’t sound upset at all. “Are you the surprise they promised me?”

why not let him believe that? “Sure,” I said. “surprise.” and I grabbed him by the dick. I had one more thing to check before continuing.

ian chuckled. “That’s the spirit, doll.”

I fell to my knees. he was not willing to do what he thought. still, this act allowed me to focus on my target with the least amount of resistance from him. Once I got a good look at the smoke-colored marks near the base of Ian’s groin, I released him. only one demon marked people with these particular marks, and it was the same demon that had been haunting them for thousands of years.

“ian,” I said as I straightened up. “say goodbye. we’re leaving.”

he laughed outright. “I don’t think so. You can be cute, but two are loners, while a dozen is a party.”

I cast a contemptuous look around me. “It’s not a big loss. the clowns were fine, but none of their fake animals fought each other or even tried to jump through the rings of fire.”

At that, he gave the animal-painted prostitutes an accusing look. “You didn’t, did you?” then her eyes suddenly narrowed as she looked at me. “Wait a minute. I know you.”

We’d only officially met once before, so I didn’t think he’d remember me. someone with her tendencies had to have crossed paths with a large number of blonde women.

“Veritas, legal guardian of the vampire council,” I confirmed. then my hands landed on his shoulders. “And like I said, you’re coming with me.”

His eyes changed from their vivid natural turquoise color to a sparkling vampiric emerald. “Let a law enforcer try to ruin a perfectly good orgy. I’m sorry, love, I’m not going anywhere. Now take your hands off me before I take them off.”

I couldn’t say that. simply hitting a law enforcer was enough to get a death sentence, if the council was in a bad mood. only the vampire council itself was above us in undead society. so I ignored his threat and tightened my grip.

“no need for empty threats…”

The next thing I knew, I was thrown several meters away. I blinked, more surprised by his quickness than by his reckless disregard for the punishment his actions deserved.

“Isn’t that necessary?” she repeated, contempt edging her tone now. “I remember the last time I saw you. I would say that your complicity in the murder of my friend’s daughter qualifies as more than a necessity.”

she’s not dead.

The words echoed in my mind, a comfort I turned to every time I remembered that terrible day. But if only Ian didn’t know that the child’s supposed execution had been nothing more than a clever ruse. . .

“That was the council’s decision, not mine,” I said, my voice rough with memory. I had almost lost my position as a guardian of the law by arguing against the girl’s execution, but fear and intolerance had made the council immovable. at least they hadn’t managed to take his life as they intended.
