theaetetus is one of many texts by plato known as the dialogues in which the philosopher reviews some of the principles of his ideas. dialogues named for their use of the structure as simple conversations between the author and several other household names of his day.
In particular, this dialog covers the concept of knowledge. moreover, the concept of knowledge as three different facets as plato believes. the three different ideas of what knowledge is are debated and discarded as the conversation continues. no real comfort occurs regarding the topic as the discussion is cut short early.

penguin offers his version of this key plate work. A good translation is included, as well as annotations at the bottom of the page (which is great for context and comprehension as you read), plus introductory and concluding essays on the work as a whole. however, due to the length of the essays, they don’t do much to help the reader understand theaetetus, which is something of a disappointment with how penguin usually operates, especially for this dense text. it’s good if you’re reading this in a classroom setting with a teacher and classmates to get ideas and understand each other, other than that maybe look towards one of the other editions. hackett classics also has a version that may be more suitable for students. while the translation is good and concise, the background and comprehension aids come first, leaving the original text last. If you’re like me, reading a work like this is better understood with context as you go. While the introduction and essay on Plato and Theaetetus are well done, by the time the reader gets to the actual text, much of the introductory information may have been missed without relying on Plato’s actual words. the best publication of this work would have to be the oxford world classics’. John Mcdowell translates this piece and has a solid teaching career at both the University College and the University of Oxford, as well as at various Harvard University Press publications. Included is a great introduction that places Theaetetus in his position in the rest of Plato’s works, as well as excellent notes that relate the author’s ideals to the world around him and to philosophy as it has grown since.
Plato’s sophist is one of the works of the great thinkers that analyzes the postulates of their ideals. Written as a series called dialogues, they all take place as conversations between the author and other household names of his day.

This text reviews the difference between sophists and philosophers. a distinction that points to the subject of what both thinkers believe and focus on. Likewise, the sophistry of philosophy in relation to politics is discussed. Many readers compare this work with others in the dialogue series to better understand the distinction between the two types of thinkers, since Plato has had both characters in his other works.
hackett classics offers a version that you should not refuse. easy to read and plus a good breakdown of the central arguments make this edition one to consider. however, compared to other editions, this one often falls by the wayside. That said, most other versions conflate Sophist with Plato’s earlier work, Theaetetus, so if you’re looking for just Sophist, this one will give you what you need. if a combined effort isn’t something that will deter you, then consider these other issues. Loeb’s classical library had editions covering all of Plato’s works. they offer a sensible translation and notes to consider for other possible Greek to English translation options for those words that don’t transfer as well. A rather brief introduction is also included for a quick introduction. cambridge texts brings the best to the table. A great introduction by fellow translator Christopher Rowe goads into the details of the work and the language. Which, combined with annotations on everything related to context, modern thoughts, and relation to the rest of Plato’s ideas, make this edition the best for your search.
