the series “sunny randall” follows the main character sunny randall, who is a detective. Parker set her up for Helen Hunt to play in a movie, but it never happened. she kept the series going because her publisher asked her to. Both Randall and Spencer (another boston detective created by Parker) have things in common, but also things that make them unique. there are six novels in the series.
sunny randall is a private investigator in the city of boston and used to be a police officer. she has a bull terrier named rosie, she is a college graduate and would like to be a painter. Randall also has an ex-husband named Richie and Richie is from a mafia family. her father, phil randall, was also a police officer, and calls sunny to help him investigate a case later in the series (“spare change”, the sixth novel in the series).
sunny also appears in parker’s “jesse stone” series of novels and jesse, in turn, appears in some of the sunny books. this is the result of the two of them dating for a while before they both realize their relationship just isn’t going to work out. It is also the result of sunny’s appearance in “split image”, a novel by jesse stone in which she had her own slipcase and carried a good part of the novel by herself.

“Family Honor” is the first novel in the “Sunny Randall” series written by Robert B. Parker and was released in 1999. When Sunny Randall takes on a case for a wealthy family in order to find their missing teenage daughter, his expectations of what a detective is supposed to do will be tested. Randall, through his contacts in the underworld, is able to find his daughter, named Millicent. Millicent has turned to prostitution and Randall rescues her from the vicious pimp who had Millicent under her thumb. Millicent refuses to go back to her family and stays with Randall, who knows very little about raising a tough teenager. sunny plays a bodyguard for millicent, who has committed greater crimes than running away from her, and sunny has to defend this young woman from the gangsters. He forces Sunny to call Richie, his ex-husband, who has mob ties, and his gay friend Spike. There is a lot for Sunny to do with this alliance that he has formed; including solving a murder and taking on a conspiracy that reaches the top of government in massachusetts and turn milicent into a functional young woman.
Fans of the novel enjoyed the dialogue found in the novel, finding that there is a lot of wit and humorous bits. some found themselves reading the entire novel in a single day. some found that the novel took them to wonderful places and was very enjoyable. the novel exceeds expectations for some as they found the novel really captures the female voice and perspective here. Some found that, like other Parker work, they really enjoyed it and found that they finished it very quickly. this left them eagerly awaiting the next of his novels. Fans of the novel felt that although she was like another of Parker’s characters, she thinks and breathes like a woman, and not just like men want her to be a woman. Even though the novel has some quality to it, Parker manages to bring a quality story and brings fresh ideas to the book. Fans of the novel became fans of Robert Parker’s work and wanted to read more of his books.
some readers didn’t like the way the novel reads as if parker just made his main character (spenser) a woman. some find that parker recycles part of something he used once before in his stone series, and others don’t mind that as he doesn’t seem to bring anything new this time. there were some who didn’t like it like the way parker uses threatening things to carry the story and with short chapters you have to read another one to finish a simple conversation started in the previous chapter. some found that the novel would work better as a screenplay as it contains many pages of dialogue and would then be used to make a movie with charismatic actors playing all the parts.

“perish twice” is the second novel in the “sunny randall” series written by robert b. parker and was released in the year 2000. this time, sunny randall must help three different women with three equally dangerous problems. family, friends and business, for all these reasons she must do this and all can be deadly for her.
Fans of the novel liked the way the novel deepened after what seemed like a simple beginning and the ending left things in a way most books don’t end. Parker’s excellent writing in the novel leaves the reader with many thoughts after reading the novel. fans found themselves reading much more of the novel than they had originally planned, instead of reading a couple of paragraphs, they read multiple chapters. fans enjoy the abilities and his ability to use the resources at his disposal very well. she even helps women become independent, and for the most part she has her life in order, even though she is still in love with her ex-husband.
some readers didn’t like how retread this novel feels, and everything that works in some of parker’s other novels fails and feels grating here. some felt that the novel has no plot, and that it is mostly made up of a lot of dialogue. Some readers felt that the novel is simply boring and is Parker’s first failure as a writer. some thought that the novel’s plot followed a set formula and that the novel featured nothing more than clichéd characters.
