I admit I love adaptations of romance books into movies and romance books into TV series, so I love putting together an annual list of romance books that are made into movies and TV shows every year.

of course, this year making this kind of list is not so easy.
Some movies that were scheduled to start production in 2020 were obviously pushed back and it remains to be seen where other book adaptations stand with their timelines.
That said, there are some books and movies with actual release dates or anticipated 2021 releases that we can look forward to.
who is filming romance books for movies or tv series?
passionflix
passionflix is a production company that has reopened and restarted filming at the end of 2020.
passionflix is a “premium streaming service that offers original movies, series and short films, adapted from best-selling romance novels, along with an impressive library of your all-time favorite romantic classics.”
since 2017, passionflix has produced 11 films, series and short films, its latest release being gabriel’s inferno, an adaptation of the novel by sylvain reynard, which was released in may 2020 and its third installment was released in november 2020.
They also released 5 Christmas quickies, short films under 20 minutes, in December 2020 before starting their 2021 lineup.

netflix
netflix has some romance books for movies in its 2021 lineup, as well as some romance books for tv series.
but before you see their 2021 lineup, you can check out their 2020 last minute release.
The Bridgerton Series, adapted by Shonda Rhimes based on the series by beloved author Julia Quinn, premieres December 25, 2020.
If you missed this release in late 2020, you have to watch it in 2021! is the streaming service’s biggest series to date.

May 14, 2021 – in theaters
This coming-of-age drama will be released in theaters on May 14.
This is a young adult romance that finds 18-year-old Finley Sinclair struggling with her grief over the death of her older brother. Wanting to feel closer to him, she decides to enroll in an exchange program in Ireland, a place he loved to travel to.
on the plane she meets beckett rush, a hollywood teen heartthrob who convinces her to be his assistant while he teaches her ireland.

February 2021 – on netflix
The highly anticipated third and final book-to-film adaptation of the To All the Boys I’ve Love Before series premieres this February on Netflix.
lara jean is having a fantastic senior year with lots to look forward to including prom, new york field trip and beach week. But when unexpected news arrives, she has to rethink her plans and it comes down to whether she follows her head or her heart.

felicity jones and shailene woodley lead the cast of this film which is scheduled for release on July 23, 2021.
jojo moyes brings a romantic double story spanning 40 years. in 1960, jennifer stirling wakes up in the hospital, but she can’t remember anything, not the tragic car accident that got her there, not her husband, not receiving the letter, signed simply with a “b”, asking her to leave her husband.
In 2003, a journalist named Ellie discovers the same thing and becomes obsessed with finding out how this story ended in hopes of resurrecting her faltering career. Ellie’s search will rewrite history and help her see the truth about her own modern romance.

launch postponed until 2022
abigail cowen and tom lewis are in the lead roles in this romance book-to-movie which is in post-production and although it is scheduled for a limited release in 2021, it will now be released in 2022.
Like a child sold into prostitution, the angel expects nothing from men but betrayal. She doesn’t wait for Michael Hosea, a man who feels called by God to marry Angel and love her unconditionally.
As she slowly begins to trust and love Michael in return, so do her feelings of unworthiness and fear that drive her to leave her husband. As she returns to the darkness, she must learn that true healing for her can only come from the one who loves her the most.

Filming for this passionflix movie started in October 2020 and finally released on May 27, 2021.

The second season of A Discovery of Witches debuted on January 8, 2021 and is available to watch on AMC+ and Sky One.
A third and final season has concluded that began in late 2020 and is expected to premiere in late 2021 or early 2022.
At Oxford’s Bodleian Library, young scholar Diana Bishop unknowingly summons a haunted alchemical manuscript in the course of her research. She is descended from an ancient and distinguished line of witches, but Diana wants nothing to do with witchcraft.
However, her discovery sets a fantastical underworld in motion, and a horde of demons, witches, and vampires soon descend on the library, seeking Diana as the only creature who can break a spell.

sex/life is the television program that is being developed based on easton’s book, 44 chapters about 4 men. will debut on netflix on June 25, 2021 for a total of 8 episodes.
Faced with an uninspiring sex life, bb resorts to journaling about her passionate, testosterone-fueled ex-boyfriends. she just didn’t expect her straight husband’s accountant to read her diary and up her game.

Season 2 in production: release postponed until 2022 on netflix
Netflix announced in February 2021 that a second season of Bridgerton was coming. filming wrapped on November 21, 2021, so it looks like the season will premiere in 2022.
This season will focus on Anthony Bridgerton’s love interest, the older brother, and will be an adaptation of Julia Quinn’s book, The Viscount Who Loved Me.
Jonathan Bailey will reprise his role as Anthony Bridgerton and Simone Ashley has been cast in the role of Kate.
anthony bridgerton may have a reputation as a notorious rake in society, but he’s finally set on getting married and has already chosen his wife. he pity that the older sister of his fiancée does not see the party with good eyes.

a breath of snow and ashes by diana gabaldan
season 6 release date: pushed back to 2022 on starz
filming for outlander season 6 finished in 2021 and it was finally announced that the season premiere will be on March 6, 2022.
The year is 1772, the eve of the American Revolution. The Governor has asked Jamie Fraser to protect the colony, but he knows from his wife that he is time traveling as war and independence loom.
the frasers must navigate this precursor to war while also being aware of their reported deaths dated in a newspaper clipping from 1776.

Season 3 release date: July 9, 2021 on netflix
virgin river season 2 aired on November 27, 2020 and the show has also received a renewal for a third season. season 3 finally dropped on July 9, 2021 and saw a renewal for seasons 4 and 5.
virgin river continues the story of midwife/nurse practitioner melinda monroe who moves to a remote mountain town to escape the heartbreak of losing her husband.

Season 7 is Coming to Starz
starz announced that there will be an outlander season 7 with the return of top stars.
With Season 6 now released in early 2022, the earliest we can expect for Season 7, which will be based on the seventh book in the series, An Echo in the Bone, is 2023.
jamie and claire fraser are sure who will win the American rebellion, but they don’t know the price they will have to pay.

Netflix turned the Sweet Magnolias book series into a television series, Sweet Magnolias, with the first season premiering on May 19, 2020.
In July 2020 the series was renewed for a second season but there is no news of filming or release date.
Maddie Townsend’s life is turned upside down when her husband leaves her for a younger woman, leaving their three children heartbroken in the process.
When her son’s anger issues begin to affect his love of baseball, Maddie steps in to help and meets his coach Cal Maddox. She soon finds out that Cal has feelings for her, but a relationship could ruin her reputation and her career.

hbo is currently adapting the time traveler’s wife into a television series. rose leslie and theo james have been cast in the lead roles as clare and henry with the series currently in pre-production.
The series is slated to premiere on HBO and HBO Max sometime in 2022.
clare meets her future husband when she is six and henry is thirty-six, yet the two marry when she is twenty-three and henry is thirty-one. Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with a chrono shift disorder that causes her genetic clock to reset and throws him back in time.

starz is adding another romance-based television series to its lineup with martin’s intercepted. casting has begun, but there’s no word yet on production or an anticipated release date.

maas is currently writing the series with ron moore, who adapted the famous outlander book series for television.

the game of hate movie began production in late 2020 and will finally be released on December 10, 2021.
lucy hale and austin stowell (who replaced robbie amell) are the stars of this movie.
lucy and joshua share an office and take the need to one-up each other to a whole new level.
But when a promotion comes up that only one of them will get, he takes his office shenanigans to new heights.

The remaining two books in the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy are slated to become movies after the first book’s successful movie, Crazy Rich Asians.
Production was supposed to start in 2020, but cast availability and other issues have delayed filming of both China’s Rich Girlfriend and Rich People’s Trouble which are supposed to be filmed back-to-back.
