mlynowski says her “whatever comes next” series is inspired by events from her childhood and some of her daughter’s. As a child she had always liked fairy tales and she made up stories that she dictated to her mother who wrote them down. what she loved even more were fractured fairy tales, that she got to fracture herself. one of the stories she remembers telling her mother was “the princess and the m&m’s”, which she especially remembers as she loved chocolate and hated vegetables. She would exercise her creative license as an author when she would read the same fairy tales to Chloe’s daughter that she was in middle grade. as she read the classics to her daughter, she found herself hating some of her endings, causing her to change and fracture them. For example, she didn’t like that the only way Cinderella could get away from her wicked stepmother was by marrying the prince, or that Hans Christian’s original version of “The Little Mermaid” required the Little Mermaid to lose her tongue and tail. . Seeking to inject some feminist perspectives, she developed the What After series of novels. the first novel in the series was the rewrite of “snow white” that she first published in 2012. given her experience rewriting the classics in her childhood, it was very easy to put together a rewrite of the novel, since she already has the image of white Nieves who doesn’t eat the apple and therefore doesn’t need to marry a prince.

sarah mlynowski’s “whatever comes after” series of novels is the story of jonah and abby, a sibling duo who find themselves in the world of fairy tales in “alice in wonderland” situations. “. once they are into their favorite tales, they change the narratives to be less unpleasant. For example, Abby’s best friend is the one who suffers the fate of being pricked by the cursed thorn instead of Sleeping Beauty. They also save Snow White from consuming the poison apple and totally rewrite the plot and ending of the story. the new fractured narratives follow the kids through their participation in the classics and prevent them from having the bad endings that they do in their originals. In an effort to make the stories congruent with the realities of the modern world, Mylnowski modifies the stories to reflect modern lines of thought. For example, in his Aladdin stories there are still two genies, but one is now Karimah, an elementary school teacher who struggles to control her powers. Karimah now helps Jonah, Abby and Aladdin defeat the evil wizard and win the heart of the princess. Inspired by the experiences of her daughters, the stories change as they grow, to reflect their stages of development and challenges.
