Even if you do most of your reading on your favorite device, a visit to a used bookstore is a treat. being surrounded by thousands of books that others have enjoyed reminds us that there is much to learn and enjoy. a book you’ve never heard of might catch your eye and you might discover your new favorite author.

Here’s a close-up look at three used bookstores in Charlotte, including the new Book Buyers location (starting February 7, 2022).

And, while not a used bookstore, it’s worth mentioning Park Road Books, 4139 Park Road. This independent bookstore has been in existence since 1977 and is the only full-service independent bookstore in Charlotte. they can get you anything amazon can.

Book Buyers has moved from its longtime location in Plaza Midwood to Eastway Crossing, 3040-B Eastway Drive. It reopened February 7th, 2022.

since 1999, book buyers, has been one of charlotte’s best places to get lost. It is huge and the selection of books is amazing. there’s a good chance you’ll find what you’re looking for, but an even greater chance you’ll find something you’re not looking for, which is one of the great joys of a used bookstore.

Book Buyers’ Eastway Crossing neighbors include Tommy’s Pub, EastSide Local Eatery, VisArt Video, Armada Skate Shop, Bart’s Mart and many others.

even within book buyers, you almost have a store within a store. lee prefers, daughter of book buyers owner richard prefers, has a section dedicated to her business, the greener apple, which specializes in vegan and organic products. she’ll find eco-friendly cleaning products, vegan snacks, stainless steel food containers, bamboo utensils, kid-safe toys, and more.

Julias packs a lot into her space, which is part of the Habitat for Humanity Restoration on Wendover Road. there is a rare and antique book section, with some books from the 1890s. children’s books are priced as low as 15 cents, up to $2, with the idea that teachers can keep their classrooms stocked with books without spending lots of money.

You can get mass-market paperbacks for $1.25, paperbacks for $2.98, and hardcovers for $5.98, with discounts for multiple purchases. They also have a section for vinyl records, and most records are between $1 and $5.

The space has a quirky, cozy vibe that may be familiar to locals. brenda ische, partner and designer at amelie’s french bakery, is the creative force behind many of the upcycled furniture and accessories you’ll find at julia’s, a natural setting for them as the restoration is full of items that cry out for a second chance .

There are several small tables and some comfortable seating on the main level of Julia’s, but head upstairs for extra coffee seating, as well as a better view of this mural, which you may miss below unless you make a point of looking up.

artist eliyahu benysrael, whose work can be found around charlotte and beyond, created and donated this mural, which represents the scope of the habitat for humanity’s work: the construction of a house, but also the education of the owner who is part of the process. Benysrael and his family became homeowners in Charlotte with the help of Habitat for Humanity.

When you donate a book to Julia’s Cafe & Bookstore, you’re helping to provide stable homes for your neighbors. all kinds of books are welcome, except encyclopedias and magazines.

an added bonus when you visit julia’s is the opportunity to shop at habitat for human restore. After buying books, you can buy used sofas, light fixtures, sinks, chairs, and bookcases.

those are novel books

charlotte’s newest used bookstore is that’s novel books, which has set up shop at the far north location of camp hygge, a coworking space, at 330 camp road. the bookstore is co-owned by hygge owner garrett tichy and hygge director of marketing alyssa pressler.

The owners’ goal is to create a meeting space for writing, literacy, creativity and art.

We’ll be back soon, but those novelty books clearly benefit from the enthusiastic founders and their location in the creative hub that camp north end is fast becoming.
