Shirley Jackson (born 1916 – died 1965) was an American author of short stories, horror, biographies, and memoirs. she was famous in her time, and her works have received literary criticism in recent years. She has been recognized as an inspiration for a host of authors, including Sarah Waters, Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, Nigel Kneale, Joanne Harris, and Richard Matheson.
Jackson is famous for her short story The Lottery (1948) and The Haunting of Hill House (1959), which is considered one of her best ghost stories ever written. the author was born in san francisco, california, although she claimed she was born in 1919, her birth certificate indicates she was born in 1916. her family lived in burlingame, california, a wealthy, middle-class suburb featured in shirley’s debut novel, the way through the wall (1948). her relationship with her mother was strained, her father had married young, and her mother was disappointed that she got pregnant with shirley because she expected to have a good time with her husband. Due to this reason, Shirley was unable to fit in with other children and therefore she spent most of her time writing to the distress of her mother.

shirley attended brighton high school; She then attended the University of Rochester so her parents could keep an eye on her. she transferred to syracuse university where she flourished both creatively and socially unlike her previous university. it is in rochester where shirley met her future man, stanley edgar hyman and she also participated in the university literary magazine.
Shirley and Hayman were known for their generosity and often surrounded themselves with notable literary talent. both were passionate readers, and their personal library contained more than 100,000 books. They were blessed with four children, Joanne (Jannie), Laurence (Laurie), Barry, and Sarah (Sally). Shirley died in 1965 of congestive heart failure in her sleep at North Bennington at age 48.
During her lifetime, Shirley’s novels were nominated for and won several awards. For example, Come Dance with Me in Ireland was selected as the best American short story in 1944. The Haunting Hill House was nominated for the National Book Award in 1960. Birthday Party was selected as the best American short story of 1964. Come With Me Featured in the New York Times Book Reviews for Best Fiction of 1968. In 2007, the Shirley Jackson Award was established; the award is usually given to authors of horror, dark fantasy, and psychological suspense literature.

In addition to adaptations for television, theater and radio, the lottery was filmed three times. shirley’s novel we’ve always lived in the castle was converted by hugh wheeler starring shirley knight. Come With Me was adapted as an episode of American Playhouse that aired between 1982 and 1993.
In 2010, “…………..live in the castle” was adapted into a musical drama that aired at the Yale Repertory Theater in 2010.
In 2016, We’ve Always Lived in the Castle was selected for the film adaptation of the mystery-thriller. Directed by Stacie Passon, the film stars Alexandra Daddario, Sebastian Stan, Taisa Farmiga and Crispin Glover.

Published in 1959, The Haunting of Hill House is considered one of Shirley’s best works of unnerving horror. is a story of four seekers who make their way into a strange pile called house on the hill.

the main character of the story is eleanor; she is a fantastic character. she’s not sure if she believes the haunting stories, but she still agrees to spend the summer at the house she claims to be haunted. she is somehow insecure, introverted and in most cases she finds herself fantasizing about her present and future situations. Eleanor is both fascinated and frightened by the idea of loneliness. Being an introvert, some of her best fantasies involve being alone, isolated in a place without unwanted intrusion from others. however, after spending nights in the haunted house, being alone is probably not the best idea. what induces fear in eleanor and the other residents of the house on the hill is the inability to reconcile with the observed phenomena at the time they occur. they encounter something whose explanation cannot be provided instantly, and their minds are incapable of coping.

A sophisticated young woman narrates her difficult path from being the daughter and the girl to a college woman. Can something sophisticated and naive be present at the same time? the author has worked on this type of integrated commentary in the second person, but often in the voice of a detective, news reporter, and some other questioning person.
hangsaman features a unique and comprehensive cast of characters. First, there is Natalie, a woman in search of self-discovery, and she has to deal with being the outsider in the family. Then there is Natalie’s insufferable father: his letters to her daughters while they were in college, perfect masterpieces of blocked empathy and conceit.
