#1 nightfall by isaac asimov (1941)

voted by the sfwa as the best science fiction story of all time. a classic story of wonder, paranoia, madness and introspection. masterfully dives into the deepest fears and opens the mind to the wonderful possibilities that are out of sight. There is also a novel version of this classic; however, I would recommend the short story over the novel. Do not miss this! asimov is a wonderful writer and this story brings together the best spirit of science fiction.

#2 mimsy were the borogroves by lewis padgett (1943)

one of the ten finalists in the sfwa vote, this wonderful and highly believable story takes one back to the excitement and bewilderment of childhood. Parental angst, fears, and worry is something every parent has experienced. With a special ending that absolutely tugs at the heartstrings, this is a story not to be missed.

#3 sand by frederic brown (1944)

#4 the gun shop by a.e. van vogt (1942)

a classic story of pride, tradition, introspection, tyranny and freedom. Fara’s journey from stubborn believer to skeptic to enlightened consciousness is something we can all connect with. the ending is special and engenders the sweet feeling of freedom from oppression. this story was also one of the top ten entries in the sfwa hall of fame.

#5 the million year picnic by ray bradbury (1948)

Bradbury’s “The Martian Chronicles” is a classic compendium of wonderful science fiction short stories. Although his short story “Mars Is Heaven (The Third Expedition)” made it into the top twenty in the SWFA vote, he would highly recommend the final short story “The Million Year Picnic”. Bradbury has a unique writing style; with absolute moments of pure verbal art. Take the time to read “The Martian Chronicles” in its entirety and you will more fully appreciate the magnificent and moving ending to the final story.

#6 isaac asimov’s last question (1956)

This short story is a classic asimov, with an engaging plot and a powerful, thought-provoking ending. Although not listed in the SFWA Hall of Fame compendium, you can find this story in another older release “Nine Mornings” by Asimov, which is itself a very fine collection of short stories from the master writer. this particular short story was supposedly his favorite and one of the best science fiction has to offer.

#7 a walk in the dark by arthur c. clarke (1950)

the very popular arthur c. Clarke has legions of fans and placed two stories in the top fifteen of all time (“The Star” and “The Nine Billion Names of God”). with an interesting and whimsical style, coupled with a knack for making technique seem understandable, he is one of the icons of science fiction. His short story “A Walk in the Dark” is a classic “knocks in the night” scary story with a tongue-in-cheek ending. You can find this and other stories in the compendium “The Collected Histories of Arthur C. clarke”, also essential in your library.

pure old science fiction is the name of the game in this story. a classic story of villain versus unwitting hero; highly entertaining with top-notch sci-fi imagination. this story was one of the top five entries in the sfwa hall of fame.
