📝instructions

This is meant to be a brief overview of this stacked book decorating DIY project. For step-by-step instructions and a full printable tutorial with materials, scroll down to the teal box below.

  1. Gather your supplies. Your local home improvement store will usually cut the lumber to size for you free of charge, as long as you buy your lumber there. Sand the edges and surfaces of each book to prepare them for painting.
  2. Use white craft paint to put a base coat on your books. set them aside to dry. if grain lifts after painting, sand lightly. use a mix of white and ivory craft paint for the final coat of paint. dip your brush in both colors and make sure you don’t overmix the colors and let the top coat be rough. set aside to dry.
  3. Dry brush some light gray paint on the sides and edges of the books where natural wear would occur on a real book. allow to dry.
  4. prepare your typewriter-style alphabet stamps to stamp the message home sweet home. Put the books spine side up, touch each letter stamp in the ink and stamp on the spine. it’s okay if the letters aren’t perfectly aligned, it will add to the farmhouse charm.
  5. stack the books and wrap three or four times with twine. secure the end with a knot and be sure to leave the tails long. To create the bow, wrap the string around your hand five or six times, trim the end, and place it in the center of the stack of books. secure in place by knotting the tails around the bow.
  6. change things up by creating any message that speaks to you or represents your home and family. Your family and friends will never know how quick and easy it was to create this modern book stack!
