summary of character abilities
each character has five (5) skill slots in their character menu; the first four are basically universal abilities that all characters know; these include:
- cardio – physical fitness and endurance skills.
- witness – a kind of combination of common sense and common skills or dexterity .
- fighting – close combat skills.
- shooting– – firearm skills.
special skills – character skill slot 5
The fifth skill slot is usually open for most characters (unassigned), although when you create a new save some of the characters will have a skill in that fifth slot. this is especially true when you opt to do the tutorial which takes place in the army camp, in the same start of a new journey.

in most saves for new games, the fifth slot is taken by the companion character (instead of the character you play as, in other words, your “main” and not the one that ends up getting infected with the plague of blood) . you can actually choose his special ability (the fifth ability slot) which you can tweak as needed by simply reloading the menu until you get the ability you want.
when you start a new game via the skip tutorial button, you can actually select the fifth skill that all three community members can start with, which is one of the additional elements of choosing that startup method, though the downside is that you often can’t choose the startup map specifically using that method.
unlike the tutorial route, which is pretty much limited to the small selection of basic character abilities including:
- chemistry;
- crafts;
- gardening;
- mechanical.

The limited skill set above is really useful because there are facilities or facility expansions that require them, so you are really offered useful skills, but naturally there are other skills that are also required for some of the facilities and expansions. not in the above list.
All is not lost, though: those skills can be acquired by having your characters read textbooks that you acquire through looting, containers, and trading with mystery merchants.
Locations likely to contain textbooks include libraries and stores, as well as homes. which noted that it should come as no surprise that there are in fact many other skills, and when you choose to start by skipping the tutorial like we said, you get to choose the skill for each of the three community members. a partial list of available abilities, some of which are rarer than others, includes:

It’s important to remember that starting skills, and this is especially true for the common set, change once you max out the xp for that skill, after which you’re presented with a branching tree of related specialization skills that you’ll then need . to choose from!
training/addition through textbooks
Note that these books will increase the stat level for a stat you already know; for example, if someone in your community has the medical skill and you find a medical textbook, reading it will level up your existing medical skill and possibly even level it for you.

Common skills are essentially the roots and barrel of the tree, with branching specializations that extend through choices made by the player. we cover the details below. note that the basic abilities covered in this document also have utility actions you can use to level them up, which is certainly something to consider and actively work on!
So, let’s examine the most common skills, shall we?
- cardio – physical fitness and endurance skills.

- train and level up through firefights and shooting range exercises.
advanced character skills
advanced skills are the skills that basically stem from the roots and trunk of each basic skill tree; These skills and skill sets are essential parts and specialization items that apply to each of the character types for members of your settlement or party. we cover the details below.
- cardio – basic skill.
- cardio > stunts – dodging and climbing are faster and cost less energy.
- flying attack unlocked.
- drop kick attack unlocked.
- wit > discipline – increased resistance, light load limit and weapon durability.
- wit > scouting: increased scouting range, enemy detection, and weapon durability.
- wit > stealth: faster sneak, quieter interactions, and reduced visibility to enemies.
- fight > close combat – improved use of small arms and lower stamina cost for close combat.
- fight > thrust attack unlocked.
- grand slam attack unlocked.
- fight > leg sweep attack unlocked.
- shots > firearms skills – train through firing range exercises & shoot enemies.
skill textbooks
As noted above, these textbooks can be used to increase the training level of your skill/special ability by simply having the character who already possesses said skills read the textbook while it is in your possession by opening their screen storage and pressing ‘x’ to have them read and therefore process the book.
reading a textbook can add anywhere from 1 star to 4 stars, the number being solely a function of the rng (random number generator) that is built into the game code.
