about stieg larsson:
stieg larsson was born on august 15, 1954 and left this world too soon on november 9, 2004. sadly, his literary works were not known until after his death. however, he was a well-known journalist and activist. Although his books continue to top bestseller lists, he never knew how successful they would be if published posthumously. Larsson spent most of his life in Stockholm and this is also the region where he worked as a freelance journalist and investigator for right-wing extremists.
childhood and early years
Larsson’s birth occurred in the northern Swedish city of Skelleftea. the family lived in the area because his father and his grandfather worked at a local foundry plant. When Larsson was just one year old, his father was poisoned with arsenic and he was forced to resign his position at the plant. the family packed their bags and moved to stockholm but left larsson with his grandparents as there were no adequate living conditions or space. he stayed in the village of bjursele with his grandparents until he was 9 years old when his grandfather passed away. When Larsson was older he cited his grandfather as a major influence on his writing and activities. His grandfather was a political activist who was arrested in World War II for opposing the Nazis.
As a child, Larsson loved to read and particularly enjoyed the children’s authors Enid Blyton. Larsson was influenced by the crime novels written by author Maj Sjowall, as well as the detective fiction of Mickey Spillene. These authors were favorites of Larsson’s parents and he, too, grew to enjoy their writing. When he was 12 years old, Larsson had attempted to write his first novel. When his father discovered the manuscript in an abandoned notebook, he made it a point to buy Stieg his own typewriter for his 13th birthday. This was an expensive and noisy gift for the day, so the young man spent his time writing in the basement. and only went up for meals.

larsson was 21 years old in 1975 when he joined the Swedish army just to do his compulsory military service. He maintained his political activist stance on the issues and began smuggling the Trotskyist magazine Red Soldier to other members of the armed forces. Once he was discharged, he went to East Africa to help train Marxist guerrillas in the use of grenade launchers. After his military experience, Larsson returned to Stockholm and began extensive research related to right-wing extremism. In the early 1980s, Larson joined a British magazine, Reflector, for which he was a Scandinavian correspondent. he also worked for fjarde internationalen as an editor. He also served as the editor of Expo magazine, which helped provide him with a model to use in his fictional writings in the millennium that followed.
early beginnings in crime fiction
Larsson was said to be very content with his life and seemed happy to those who knew him. he smoked 3 packs of cigarettes a day, lived basically on hamburgers and often worked day and night. He was also an avid crime novel reader, but everyone was shocked when he started writing crime novels in 2001. He claimed that he just did it because he was fun. he wrote very fast because it was easy for him and in 2003 he had completed the first volume of the trilogy, “the girl with the dragon tattoo”. On the surface, the novel was just another detective novel, but the villains were Nazis or Neo-Nazis and the crimes that were committed were heinous. his storylines contained lurid crimes such as incestuous rape, both hetero and homosexual, as well as heinous murders. one victim in his stories was gagged with a sanitary pad before being stoned to death. another victim was tied up and placed face down on a bed of glowing embers.

When Larsson completed his first manuscript, he submitted it to a publisher that had a long history of publishing crime novels, Piratforlag. the publishers refused to read even the first line as they refused even to open the package containing the manuscript. they said they did not read manuscripts received from first-time authors. the truth is that today they regret this decision. larsson went to a second publisher, norstedts forlag. they accepted the entire millennium trilogy and to date have sold over 3.5 million copies.
most outstanding works
before giving birth to the millennium trilogy, larsson had already established himself as a political activist and journalist and had achieved a mild level of notoriety. in the 90s he completed the millennium trilogy under the original titles in swedish translated into english: men who hate women, the witch who dreamed of a can of gasoline and the castle that explodes in the air.

The books were unusually successful in Sweden and were soon picked up by a small publisher in Britain. Quercus translated the Swedish titles into these English titles: The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Wasp’s Nest.
The trilogy focuses on the life of lisbeth salander, a punk-style computer hacker. The other main character in it is Mikail Blomkvist, a political activist with a very similar personal story to Larsson’s. the trio of thrillers are the adventures of these two who team up to take on a serial killer who is simply deranged with a hatred of women. They then come face to face with a sex trafficking ring and then a conspiracy occurring within the Swedish National Security Service. sales of the trilogy have already exceeded 40 million dollars. larsson is likely to join the likes of j.k. rowling and dan brown.

stieg larsson was the first author to sell more than a million e-books through amazon.com. his works have also won numerous awards, including: crystal key award (2006, 2008), best swedish crime novel award (2006), itv3 crime novel award – international author of the year (2008), galaxy british awards Book Awards (2009), Anthony Award – Best First Novel (2009) and USA Today’s Author of the Year (2010)
