The Edge Chronicles – Edge Chronicles book order

The question that we have been asked the most over the years is “what is the best order to read the avant-garde chronicles?”

The simple answer is this: we wrote them all as stand-alone books, so any order will work. however, we know as readers that this probably wouldn’t have satisfied us, so here’s the more detailed answer.

the order in which we write them

beyond the deepwoods was published in 1998. at that time, we hadn’t planned a sequel, but since we enjoyed writing it so much, we decided to make it a trilogy and wrote two more books about twig; storm chaser (1999) and midnight over sanctaphrax (2000). these three books became the twig saga.

then we wanted to write more about sanctaphrax, but since the anchor chain had been cut and the city had floated away, we had to go back in time to when quint was a young man. this book became the curse of the gloamglozer (2001).

Right now we thought a five-book series would be fun, and because we wanted to find out what happened to twig, we jumped back in time and wrote the last of the sky pirates (2002). however, because twig was already an old man, and no one wants to read about old men! -We introduce his grandson, Torre. As a character, we liked rook, so we decided to write two more books about his adventures: vox (2003) and freeglader (2004). these three books became the saga of the tower.

so, twig and rook had sagas of three books each, but quint only had one book about him. This seemed very unfair, so we went back in time and wrote two more books about him: The Winter Knights (2005) and The Sky Galleons Clash (2006). And so, finally, we also had the fifth saga.

chronological order

With all nine books written, it now makes more sense to read them in the correct chronological order, starting with quint, continuing with twig, and ending with rook. if we hadn’t written them differently, this is the order we would read them in!

then, following these nine books, we decided to write a tenth book in the series, which we thought would tie up all the loose ends and conclude the avant-garde chronicles forever. we call it the nate saga and it was not published as three books but in one (large) volume.

but we still couldn’t leave the edge world, so we wrote a fifth and final saga, which takes place shortly after the end of the immortals. It’s about Nate’s nephew, Cade Quarter and his adventures.

and that should be it, but of course it isn’t, because nothing is as it should be in the edge world: rocks float, lightning turns to glass, and north is at the bottom of a map …

in 2001, we wrote a groundbreaking story for world book day in the uk called cloud wolf. It’s about Quint and it describes an incident he and his father had just before the start of the gloamglozer curse. then in 2006 we wrote another groundbreaking story for world book day. this one was called the stone pilot and it gives the backstory to a character we already knew, maugin.

Later, we wrote two more stories for UK publishers. both filled the gaps between the longer sagas. The Slaughterhouse Quest is about Keris, Twig’s daughter/Rook’s mother, and links the Twig and Rook sagas. while at the end of Rufus Filatine’s bloodletting, someone finally manages to unleash Stormphrax’s power safely, ushering in the Third Age of Flight. This story unites the sagas of Rook and Nate. all four stories were published together as the lost scrolls. Unfortunately, this book is no longer in print.

however…

all four stories have now been included in the four most recent British editions of the original books.

cloud wolf is now the first five chapters of the curse of the gloamglozer.

the stone pilot is at the end of midnight over sanctaphrax.

the butcher quest is at the end of the last of the sky pirates.

the blood of rufus filatine is at the end of freeglader.

that’s all (for now), except one last story. It’s called the Map of the Sky and it tells the story of Quint and Maris, and why they abandoned their son, Twig, in the deep woods. At the moment it can only be found as a UK edition in e-book format. it may not stay that way. the edge chronicles is always full of new possibilities…
