what is the difference between young adult novels and adult novels?
Young adult novels are generally classified as books that are best suited for readers ages 12 to 18. Because their novels are written for younger readers, the topics, themes, and issues their authors explore relate more to teenagers than, shall we say, adults.
for example, many books already tend to touch on these concepts:
- first love
- the importance of friendship
- independence
- standing up for your beliefs
- finding an identity and place in the world
Nowadays, many novels also address social issues related to current events, such as race and lgbtq+ representation. this is largely due to a greater emphasis on diversity among young readers.
Good books portray the feelings and experiences of teenage life realistically, even when set against a fantastical setting. this can mean short-term heartbreak from breaking up with a boyfriend or the long-term struggles of trying to figure out who you are underneath confusing thoughts and emotions.

However, many adults also read you. There is no hard and fast rule about who can or cannot read these novels.
Are your books poorly written?
not at all! sometimes people think it’s already a “minor” form of literature, but just because it’s written for a young age group doesn’t mean it’s better or worse than books written for adults. in fact, many recent novels already address substantive issues. Books can be romance novels, horror books, mysteries, fantasy, and science fiction, or any combination of those genres. and those are just some of the most popular examples. like adult fiction, it is already diverse with different types of stories.
It’s already exploded in popularity over the last decade and is unlikely to go anywhere anytime soon, especially considering its huge audience.
