Captain Underpants is a character in a series of children’s books by Dav Pilkey. Captain Underpants is a superhero, created for a comic book written by the two main characters, George and Harold. the comics then come true when their director is hypnotized and he assumes the role of captain underpants.

The books have been very successful, selling over 50 million copies. there are 10 books in the series and 3 spin-offs. it has also won awards from disney and dreamworks is interested in adapting the books for television.

the characters

Principal Krupp: He is the principal of Jerome Horwitz Elementary School. he is obese and has an intense hatred towards children. He is often very cruel to children and that is why George and Harold hypnotize themselves to become Captain Underpants. they made a mistake trying to turn him back into mr krupp and now every time someone snaps their fingers or pours water on him he becomes captain underpants. Principal Krupp knows all about the existence of a superhero called Captain Underpants, but he doesn’t know what he is!

Captain Underpants: As mentioned above, he is the alter ego of Principal Krupp. When Krupp is in this persona, he wears boxer shorts (hence the name) and a cape with black polka dots. he becomes a superhero in book 3 and didn’t always have the powers. In the early books, George and Harold had to watch him so he didn’t do anything that might hurt him. he turns back into main krupp when someone throws water on him.

george and harold – are the founding members of treehouse comix inc. they are also best friends who live next door to each other and are in the same class at school. they are tricksters and are always playing pranks on other students. they write their comics and then sell them in the schoolyard. they sneak into the secretary’s office to make copies of her comic, and if they get caught, they get in trouble. anyway, they often have problems with mr. krupp because of his pranks.

sulu and crackers: they are harold and george’s pets. Sulu is a bionic hamster that used to belong to his nemesis Melvin. Sulu ran away when Melvin yelled at her, and now she belongs to Harold and George. crackers is your pet dinosaur. they got it on one of their time travel adventures. these pets don’t appear until later books.

melvin scornfully – melvin is the enemy of harold and george. they hate each other. Melvin is that smart nerd that everyone loves to hate. He is known as a mechanical genius and is always ratting out Harold and George.

dr diaper: is one of the main villains of the first book. he is a mad scientist but he looks a lot like a baby, so he is called dr diaper. he wants to fly the

moon, but stops at the first book. in the fourth book, he is successful when the story is altered by another character and the moon is destroyed. Fear not though, another character comes to your rescue later and restores the story line to what it was. In the first book, he also has robots, which he uses to commit heinous crimes.

book one: the adventures of captain underpants

In this book, readers first meet Harold and George when they are drawing their comic with their superhero in it. Later, they prank the school football team and get caught by the principal, Mr. krupp. he recorded everything on video and as punishment; they must become his personal slaves.

they spend the next day as his slave and then get tired and try to think of a way out of it. they end up hypnotizing him into thinking he is captain underpants and he jumps out the window to fight crime.

In this first adventure, Captain Underpants almost gets arrested because the police think he’s part of the gang that robbed banks, but Harold and George save him at the last minute.

Then, they are dragged away by forced strangers and this is where they meet dr. diaper, the villain of the stories. dr diaper has an evil plan to destroy the moon and therefore the world. He captures Captain Underpants and it’s left to Harold and George to save the day.

later, they try to get captain underpants to become mr. krupp, but nothing works. frustrated, harold throws water at him and he turns back into mr. krupp. From then on, Mr Krupp becomes Captain Underpants and back again whenever someone snaps their fingers or throws water at him.

film adaptations

as mentioned above, it was reported that dreamworks was interested in adapting the books for television, with an animated series. in 2011 they acquired the rights to a film and it is currently in development. It has since been announced that the film will be written by Nicholas Stoller and that Rob Letterman will direct.

about the author

dav pilkey is the famous author of the captain underpants books. he also does the illustrations. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio and has an older sister. As a child he suffered from ADHD and dyslexia and was often reprimanded for his behavior in schools.

He came up with the Captain Underpants characters when he was still in school. he was often kicked out of class for his behavior, and he usually had to sit at a desk in the hallway.

The book he made when he was stuck in the hallway was entered into a contest for student authors and won. as a result of this, the book was published in 1987.

He has been a writer and illustrator ever since. Since the first novel in the Captain Underpants series in 1997, he published a book almost every year until 2006. There was a 6-year hiatus because he was taking care of his terminally ill father. his father died in 2008, but it would be another 3 years before he resumed writing the series.
