inside: on the hunt for good winter books for young children? these short, interactive books are our pick for January, during our snow and bear themes.
When planning our January themed activities, the first thing I do is decide which books to read.
You are reading: Winter books for toddlers
Because toddlers and young preschoolers have shorter attention spans, I prefer books that don’t have too many words and that engage children.
I talk about this in my most popular video, the secrets of a successful meeting.
As I fill out my schedule, I look for books that hold their interest, engaging them.
You could even use props that can be displayed on the flannel board, or stick puppets that the kids can hold while I read.
(check out our little spider and twinkle, twinkle, little star accessories).
This collection of winter books for young children is our favorite for January, and I refer to it when I plan the rest of our activities.
selection of winter books for young children according to our activities
So you can better understand my choice of books, let me share a summary of our areas of interest for January:
week 1: snow and ice
week 2: snowmen
week 3: winter clothes
week 4: bears in winter
Often these areas overlap, especially if I see that children are really interested in a certain area.
I keep my schedule flexible so we can adjust our activities after carefully observing how engaged the children are.
Another thing to note is that the books are available throughout the preschool morning, not just during circle time.

We have a bookcase full of books in our reading area, plus book baskets in several areas.
If you were to walk into our classroom, you might find a teacher sitting on the couch or on the floor reading to a child or a small group of children.
This could be during center time, with kids finishing their snack before everyone else, or while transitioning to the next part of our morning.
This collection is also good for the home library!
