He began writing as a high school student at Springfield High School. his journey as an author had not been a one-day event. at a tender age, he had gotten used to reading many books. this was part of his activity during the summer times together with his family where they used to spend time in a cabin on a lake in maine. during these days, he would spend his nights reading after being busy fishing during the day. these quiet moments helped him start to think like a writer, and as a result, he began to read more and more. A defining moment in Andrew Clements’ journey as a writer came when he was given back a poem that his English teacher had written. To what he didn’t expect, he had drawn one that he admits was a rare event in his teacher’s class. In addition, the teacher went further and lavished praise on his writing and even suggested that it be published. This was a fuel of inspiration that took him to Northwestern University and made him confident in his own writing ability. Occasionally at Northwestern University, he was encouraged to write by his professors. he started writing on his own apart from class homework. he took up a literature career where he excelled in essays and poetry. Clements became interested in writing songs and poems, and learned to play the guitar while at Northwestern University. however, he wrote when he felt like it and did not write without an inner spirit of approval. he regarded writing as hard work, which he admits even now.

andrew clements taught creative writing in a series of summer workshops in high school. this was an avenue for him to practice as a teacher and he describes it as a bittersweet experience with hard work and fun involved as well. Clements graduated from Northwestern University and took an additional year to prepare as a teacher. he earned a master of art in teaching from louis national university. for seven years he taught english in public schools north of chicago, where he taught for two years in fourth grade, three years in eighth grade, and another two years in high school. this was an invaluable time for him to build year-long relationships with students and children and a joyous time interacting with bright, fun children. he also had the opportunity to read more and more and develop his ideas and grow as a well-rounded writer.

He got a publishing job at a small publisher that specialized in how-to books where the books had photos with informative captions below the photos. His name first appeared in print in a book A Country Christmas Treasure where his name appeared in the acknowledgments section as one of the book’s artisans.

After working for about a year at the publisher, a friend he had known in his college days invited him to a new company’s children’s book launch.
