reykjavik born january 28, 1961, arnaldur indridason was the son of indrioi porsteinsson, another well-known icelandic author. graduating from the university of iceland in 1996, he earned a bachelor’s degree in history before continuing his career in journalism, as well as being a film critic. It is this interest in history that has informed much of his writing career, as he focuses on sagas filled with intrigue and political upheaval, spanning generations. A forerunner in his field, he is considered a luminary by others with his influential yet popular brand of crime fiction.

writing career
publishing his first book, ‘children of dust’, in 1997, arnaldur indridason introduced his readers to the world of detective erlendur in what would become his most popular series to date. Although his initial two novels have yet to be translated into English, his subsequent books have made him a popular author not only in Iceland, but also throughout the world. this popularity has led him to top many bestseller lists again and again, as he has become one of the most profitable Icelandic authors in recent times. Further evidence of this can be found in the fact that his novels are ranked seven of the ten most popular books loaned by the Reykjavik City Library as of 2004.
with the movie ‘jar city’ produced in 2006, he saw his novel ‘myrin’ adapted to the big screen, which was directed by baltasar kormakur. This film received much praise as it was awarded the ‘Crystal Globe Grand Prix’ during the 2007 ‘Karlovy Vary International Film Festival’. Not without its fair share of awards, Arnaldur received the ‘Crystal Key Award’ in 2002 and 2003 for the best Nordic crime novel. He also managed to claim the ‘Crime Writers Association Golden Dagger Award’ for his novel ‘Silence of the Tomb’ in 2005. Recently, in 2013, he received the ‘RBA International Award for Crime Writing’, which further bolstered its international status within the field of the criminal genre. All of this success shows no sign of ending any time soon, as he plans to produce more of his infamous brand of idiosyncratic crime novels as he gains a growing audience.

this was arnaldur indridason’s first novel which was filmed in 2006 and its title translates as “the swamp” in english. Also known as ‘Jar City’ and ‘Tainted Blood’ abroad, it features Inspector Erlendur in his third book in the series, although this is the first English translation. In it, Arnaldur takes his readers to the scene of Reykjavik, where he finds a man murdered in his apartment. alone and old, the only clue the killer left behind is a photograph showing a girl’s grave, along with a cryptically written note. It is soon discovered that this old man was previously implicated in a crime many years before, but never came to trial. with that it seems that the past has once again risen to haunt them all.

As they seek to reopen this once forgotten case, it quickly comes to light that there may be much more to it than initially appeared on the surface. in what is the fifth installment of the inspector erlendur series, arnaldur indridason this time takes his audience to the normally quiet suburbs of reykjavik when a ten year old thai boy is found dead and frozen on the sidewalk during the middle of the night. from January. all evidence says this was not accidental as he was also found with stab wounds to his stomach, so it is with this that erlendur has the next case of him. Then it is soon discovered that the boy’s half-brother is also missing and nowhere to be found, so they must find out if he played a role in the crime or if he simply fears for his own life. While many believe the murder was racially motivated, it appears there may have been a suspected sex offender in the area, who was seen nearby.
Unearthing a great deal of tension in the area, the inspector looks behind what appears to be a multicultural society built on tolerance and acceptance to discover what may be some ugly truths. Taking a controversial look at a seemingly liberal community on the surface, Arnaldur Indridason aims to take a deeper look, as Inspector Erlendur attempts to confront the buried secrets of his own past, one steeped in a tragedy long hidden. until now.
