The Beautiful Creatures Series, also known as The Caster Chronicles, is a four-part young adult book series written by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. Starting in 2009, they ended with the last novel in 2012. Each character seems to have her own special power and has to fight the battle of good versus evil at some point. The books include the following titles: Beautiful Creatures (2009), Beautiful Darkness (2010), Beautiful Chaos (2011), and Beautiful Redemption (2012). The books are set in a fictional town called Gatlin in South Carolina. you won’t find this theme anywhere else: southern gothic romance. This series stars Ethan Wate, a protagonist who wants to stay in the city he once hated. And even though the girl he’s madly in love with, Lena, is driving him away, he’ll never lose hope. he continually risks his life for this girl. Although some people compare this series to the modern “twilight” saga, it is much deeper and more complex than that. the series is dark, romantic, dramatic and even a bit humorous in parts. it is also much more original than the typical love story; it is written from a man’s point of view rather than a typical woman’s. and why stop at the first book? you’ll be so hooked yourself that you’ll have to speed through all four books. this series is so loved that almost every review you find about it will receive four or five stars.

This book is written from the point of view of Ethan, who has had a pretty rough life so far. he is just a sophomore in high school and has already been through a lot. his mother died and his father is moving away. he starts having these weird dreams involving a girl he doesn’t even know. If that’s not weird enough, the girl, named Lena, suddenly moves into town with her. she and her family are known as casters, people with supernatural powers. the two start spending time together and are obviously in love. But just six months ago, on Lena’s sixteenth birthday, she will be in terrible danger. Now Ethan must stay in the city he so desperately wanted to get away from to save the love of his life.

The dreaded day of Lena’s sixteenth birthday has arrived, and she and Ethan have managed to survive. but things are not as happy as they seem. Lena’s uncle recently passed away and she is starting to move away from Ethan’s tight grip. Worse still, Ethan is the only person who can really save her. Lena has started spending time with a different man, so Ethan takes the time to learn the deep secrets about Gatlin City. A constant battle between “light and dark” is going on in the city, and they both want Lena on her team. Ethan never lets go of her love for Lena, and the two struggle to maintain their relationship amid all the secrets and problems in town. This book may seem like the typical plot of star-crossed lovers, one of whom has life-or-death supernatural powers, but you’ll find these books with a touch of fantasy second to none.

Strange new events are taking hold in the wild southern town of Gatlin. ethan thought she’d seen it all, but he’s up for a ride. ethan now thinks he’s going crazy. Suddenly, his memory starts to fail and he can’t remember the simplest things. he relates it to some disturbing dreams he is having in which (something) is after him. Lena has now “reclaimed” herself and the caster and mortal worlds are completely falling apart. an apocalypse seems to be descending on gatlin. one thing should be noted about this third book in the series: don’t skip to the end. It is a great surprise that will leave you speechless. As if Gatlin’s town in reverse wasn’t shocking enough, you’ll be even more shocked by the book’s conclusion.

This is the last and final book in this series of southern gothic fantasy books. Ethan is now in a place called “another world”, a world of the dead similar to Gatlin. Ethan finds out that “he wasn’t supposed to die” and now he’s desperate to fight his way back to Lena. this book incorporates death, dying, and acceptance in a unique way you won’t find in other fantasy novels. Lena never accepted that Ethan was gone forever, and it turns out he was right. if she thought the ending was impressive for the other three books, wait until you read the ending of this last book in the series. this book is worth the wait because it sums up the previous three books, but the unique plot is unmistakable.

The movie Beautiful Creatures hit theaters in the United States in February 2013. Directed by Richard Lagravenese, this movie successfully brought the gothic fantasy series to the big screen. It contains some big names you’ve probably seen before: Alden Ehrenreich as Ethan Wate, Alice Englert as Lena Duchannes, and Jeremy Irons as Macon Ravenwood (Lena’s uncle who later passes away). Richard Lagraven is an Oscar nominee who also directed The Fisher King and P.S. I love you. beautiful creatures came out on dvd and bluray on may 21, 2013.

The series of beautiful creatures will keep you in constant suspense and surprise. each book has the uncanny ability to be completely unique from the others, yet their plots tie back to the original plot. Beautiful Creatures is not your typical supernatural romance and fantasy book. if you are looking for a boring romance novel that you can put down after a few minutes, these books are not the option. beautiful creatures will make you wish there was a fifth book in the series.
