ben kane is a renowned writer born in kenya in 1970. although he is of irish descent and was born in this african country while his father, a veterinarian, worked there. When Kane was seven years old, his family returned to Ireland, where he went to school and eventually to university. He followed in his father’s footsteps and graduated from the University of Dublin, becoming a veterinarian. Kane tried to get a job and settle in the UK, but after a year he got the idea to see the world and set out on the journey along the famous Silk Road, a journey that lasted three months. While visiting the eastern countries, Kane saw some interesting historical landmarks, especially in Turkmenistan, where he saw the ancient city of Merv, which was an important city in the days of yore. As Kane joined this journey, he became more and more interested in ancient civilizations, especially the Roman one, which would later become the center of his literary work.
once he returned from the trip, ben kane was restless because he felt he should have seen more. A year passed and Kane decided to go on another trip around the world, and this time it lasted three years. kane used to imagine ancient warriors in the places he visited, especially roman soldiers and savage tribes of britain. This was the moment when Kane began to reconsider the career path he wanted to pursue. after returning from the trip, he dedicated himself to the life of a veterinarian, but the idea was already inside his head. Since he was a big fan of literature since his childhood, when he spent almost every penny on books, Kane began to imagine what it would be like to become a historical fiction author. he was under the influence of writers like j.r.r. Tolkien, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Rosemary Sutcliff, possibly his greatest inspiration. he began to write and in 2008 his first novel “the forgotten legion” was published. this became the series that made kane famous, and after this came other acclaimed series such as “the hannibal” and “the spartacus”. kane even made a documentary “the road to rome” which followed his path throughout italy in order to raise money for charity.

The film’s narrator is none other than Sir Ian McKellen. This wasn’t the only time Kane went on a long walk for charity. In 2013, with the help of his two friends, Kane walked the entire length of Hadrian’s Wall (which is about 117 kilometers long) and did so dressed in Roman military gear. how’s that for dedication? As mentioned above, Kane writes historical fiction and has published four series so far, focusing primarily on the ancient Roman civilization. His series covers periods of great Roman domination, wars with Hannibal, slave rebellion led by Spartacus, etc. however, “the forgotten legion” is perhaps his best work to date. This series deals with the largely unexplored Roman campaign in the Parthian Empire, an enterprise that failed spectacularly, with final defeat at the Battle of Carrhae, fought in 53 BC. the story itself focuses on the lives of four characters: two gladiators, an Etruscan and a Gaul. In the first book of the series, also called “the forgotten legions”, we meet these characters. Romulus and Fabiola are twins, born as slaves, whose life is not a walk in the park. As a teenager, Romulus is sent to gladiatorial school, to learn how to fight and amuse Rome’s idle nobility, and Fabiola becomes a prostitute.

Romulus is very talented and hardworking, attracting the attention of many important political figures in Rome. He has a tutoring influence embodied in Brennus, a Gaul who became a gladiator after his family was killed. Brennus lives for revenge and doesn’t bother to hide his hatred of the Romans. on the other hand, tarquinius is an etruscan, who is forced to adapt to the roman way of life (which he strongly opposes) and fight for his infamous “forgotten legion”. the first story follows the beginnings of these four characters, and the reader has the opportunity to meet them, as well as the laws and life of Roman society. Ben Kane did a good job of research and his books are pretty accurate in terms of historical events. these facts are not forced on the reader, but the writer allows the reader to absorb them as he goes deeper into the story. and political life in Rome influences the lives of the four protagonists.
men find themselves fighting for the side of the country that gave them nothing (except reason to hate it). Romulus, Brennus, and Tarquinius are caught in the middle of the Roman attempt to conquer the Parthians, a feat that doesn’t go over very well. They have to endure savage tribes, harsh weather conditions, and enemies waiting their turn to wound the Roman Empire. However, back home in Rome, the sole female lead fights her own battle. Fabiola has to make her way through the jungle of Roman society. A chain of events takes her to Gaul, where she has to find her lover, a Roman officer fighting rebellions led by the intrepid Vercingetorix, who threaten to destroy Julius Caesar’s army. Ben Kane once again manages to hold the threads of her intricate story, filled with many outlandish characters, both fictional and historical. It’s fun to see how established historical figures like Julius Caesar and Crassus influenced the lives of ordinary people, sometimes in ways that are hard to conceive of. kane is very good at showing the emotional struggles of his (anti)heroes, however he is prone to relying on some tired tropes and archetypes at times. In short, his work gives a good idea of the world of centurions, sandals and blood. After all, there’s a reason Kane’s books were published in a dozen countries.
