Personally, I wouldn’t recommend this book to a complete beginner because it’s challenging. you’ll need to think through the game design process in great detail, and it helps to have created a few games in your spare time.

However, taking a copy and keeping it in your library for reference is not a bad idea.

This book covers the entire history of video games, which goes far beyond simple video games. Topics include sports, board games, and recreational activities such as billiards and darts. the goal is to connect ideas and draw conclusions based on similarities between the world’s most popular games.

Understanding true game design has more to do with human psychology. what do people want from video games? how do they want to feel and what makes them come back for more?

If you want to be a successful game designer, you’ll need to answer these questions and find ways to replicate those answers in your work. And frankly, this is one of the best books to be introspective about game design.

All three authors work in the professional gaming industry, so you get real feedback & information from well-respected experts in their fields.

You’ll be immersed in a lot of theory and creative writing, which can be very important during early development. frans teaches you how to think about gaming from a broader perspective of how it can affect groups of people and culture in general.

Most of this book is a theoretical analysis that uses real-world examples and case studies to lay out the fundamentals of game design. it doesn’t offer a step-by-step approach to creating video games, however it can help you think outside the box when building your own ideas.

the author lewis pulsipher has been teaching game design in the united states since the early 2000s and is on top of modern games. he is still very active in the community, contributing articles and speaking at conferences every year.

His writing style in this book is very cordial but relaxed. it’s a fun read and will teach you many common mistakes to avoid during the game design process.

however, it is not a complete solution to creating a game from scratch, so I recommend combining it with another game design book, such as game design fundamentals.

It’s just under 200 pages long, but it includes a lot of design theory, such as 2d vs 3d games, multiplayer games, storytelling, difficulty curves, and how to handle in-game objectives.

Authors often refer to professional games from the last few decades using their successful features as prime examples for modern game design.

In the later chapters, you’ll learn about professional game production, from brainstorming to pitching your concepts and everything you need to develop a potential blockbuster. the writing style is fun to read and this book works great for both beginners and experts.

again, this is primarily an art book, so it may not be of interest to all game designers/developers. but if you want to get involved in the artistic creative process, I would definitely recommend adding this book to your reading list.
