well, teacher friends… the end of 2021 is near. I wish I could say that 2021 was much better than 2020, but that would be an overstatement of the mega servings. Sure, there were some bright spots, but there was still a lot of stress. I’m not sure if it’s all this doom and gloom, but for some reason, I’m feeling pretty wistful about 2022 coming. Will it be better than 2021? I hope so, but I’m not going to get my hopes up about it. Either way, the winter holidays are fast approaching, and that means there will be some time to kick back and relax. At this time of year, I’d give my left foot for a nap, but there’s no rest for this dedicated teacher. so instead I settle for a little relaxation. for me, relaxation equals reading. So, let’s talk about some of the must-read books for teachers in 2022.

Some of the books I’m sharing today are fun reads, while others are meant to improve you as a person, open your eyes to situations you didn’t know were happening, or help you hone your craft of teaching. but all of them are perfect to help you reshape what 2022 will look like in your personal and professional life.

Ok! Let’s get into these recommendations!

1. a teacher’s top secret by lanesha tabb

this one might look a bit familiar…it appeared earlier this year on the bts book list. and guess what? it’s so good, I’m putting it on this list too!

lanesha perfectly captures the heart of a teacher in this book and that’s good for the soul of the educator. Hope this warms his heart! read it once, then save it for the beginning of each school year. This one deserves to be brought out year after year!

buy the book here on lanesha’s website!

2. firefly lane by kristin hannah

so this has recently made a splash as a netflix series and honestly i always love reading a book that was good enough to jump to the tv screen.

I bought this book from target a few days before we were going on a weekend trip up north to visit my family and celebrate my grandmother’s 92nd birthday. I started it on the plane and finished it when we got home 4 days later.

This is a heartwarming story of two lifelong friends and their journey through the good, the bad, and the ugly. This includes growing up in the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s. For this reason, I’d say the book’s perfect audience tends to be a little older than me (I was born in ’84 and couldn’t appreciate all of the book’s musical touchpoints). a little deeper, or hannah could have explored different plots a little more. At the heart of this book are Kate and Tully and their testimony of what true friendship can be.

then why is it on my “must read” list? the heart of this book. with the years we’ve been given, I think we could all use a big dose of heart, and this book of friends forever reminds us how special and precious they can be. our friends. . plus wouldn’t it be fun to read it and then watch the series on netflix? that’s my plan!

3. changing the balance by jan burkins and kari yachts

so the “science of reading” came in and rocked the boat of balanced literacy classrooms everywhere. If you’re not sure where to start when it comes to integrating foundation-based theory into your classroom, this book is the perfect place to start!

I think this book would also make a great group study book!

check it out here on amazon.

4. master’s misery by jane morris

Let me start by saying that this book is a bit tongue-in-cheek and sometimes wildly inappropriate. but if you follow the instagram account with the same name, you will get it.

morris works to weave all the crazy things that can happen on a school day into a humorous book.

So why is this a must-read for teachers this upcoming school year? well…because their stories are true and I know all teachers can relate to them. sometimes when things are going to 💩 you need a little fellow teacher to help you remember that sometimes being a teacher is crazy. also, laughing… many, many laughs!

5. you have a real voice there

The next one isn’t out yet, but I’m telling you, it will be a must read. how can I know? by the way! Vera is the face behind the various reading account on ig and before that, she was “the tutu teacher”.

This is Vera’s second book and it’s about empowering students to use their voices for good.

order it now!

6. happy teachers change the world by thich nhat hanh and katherine weare

I think one thing all educators can agree on this school year is the lack of happiness among their peers (hence the misery of the teachers!). So… let’s talk about how we can bring more joy to education.

what’s that you say? raising the salary and cutting some of the extras from your plate? not likely… but this book is a guide to creating mindfulness, and I think that’s a start.

This book helps teachers practice meditation every day and also guides them in using meditation techniques with their students. I’m honestly intrigued and I definitely think we could all use a little calm and refocus this school year.

7. positive mindset habits for teachers by grace stevens

yes, another positivity book. Look, have you been teaching this year? it’s pretty gloomy out there, and in times of darkness, sometimes you need a little light to guide you.

then if meditation isn’t your thing, maybe some habits of mind are.

In this book, Stevens promises that in 10 steps, you’ll reduce stress, increase student engagement, and stop lugging papers and lesson plans home weekend after weekend. I think this is something we can all get behind!

8. guided math amplified by reagan tunstall

eeeekkkk! Guys, I love when educators write books for educators. it just makes my heart happy! like, who knows better about what works (and what doesn’t) in a classroom than a teacher?

My next recommendation is from Tunstall’s queen of teaching tidbits, and she’s making a splash with her debut book, Extended Guided Math.

In this book, reagan takes you step by step to completely overhaul your math block and turn it into math gold. If he’s wanted to get started with guided math in his classroom, this is a must read!

get it here on amazon!

9. a grading repair kit: 15 fixes for broken grading by ken o’connor

do you give extra credit? what about grade homework? give tons and tons of ratings? I’m not saying you’re wrong… but I’m not saying you’re right either.

This good oldie is here to help you refocus your grading practices on what really matters when it comes to grading: how well your students perform on assigned tasks. and that is why it is on this list as the best book for teachers.

Many moons ago, I led a study of this book with my second grade team and am so glad I did. o’connor not only revealed some pretty bad teaching practices my colleagues and i were doing, but also gave us permission to under-grade and make sure the grades we were giving were correct. I suggest all teachers read this book!

You can get it here on Amazon, but I’m sure if you poked around in your school’s PD library, they’ll have a copy too.
