My fifth grade daughter helped me put this list together, and it includes her top book recommendations for any child who loves magic and fantasy; many of these are her favorite books. (Note that some must-reads, including Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials series and J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, haven’t been forgotten, but are still on our reading list.)
She’s always ready for a great fantasy hero (or heroine!) story. I’m lucky to be able to share them with her, whether it’s through our read-alouds, discussions of books we’ve both read, or her detailed descriptions when she just has to share the latest development of the book she’s reading.

While I can’t speak to the opinions of all of these authors, rowling’s use of her massive platform to double down on her hurtful statements is enough to compel me to endorse others over her when recommending fantastic children’s fiction.

of course rick riordan’s percy jackson and related series are great choices, but after reading them we were ready to explore new series and new worlds.
