complete would be a missing word to describe the classic chittenden details on the subject. The first part of the three-part series gives the reader a wonderful overview of the history of the Western fur trade. From its roots to early expansion and the relationships between Native Americans and famous hunters, this book covers it all. You could spend a few hundred (perhaps a few thousand) dollars on a college course on the subject, or buy a copy of Chittenden’s book and probably walk away with the same amount of information. Call me frugal, but I’ll take the book.
Guns, Traps, and Tools of the Highlanders: By Carl P. russell
If you’re interested in firearms and trapper gear, then this is one of the best Highlander books you can buy. Purely historical, Russell’s book doesn’t try to dilute history with anything but the facts. fortunately for the reader, neither does the history of his themes begin at the beginning of the nineteenth century. instead, the author goes back in time to explain the history of different arts from their historical roots. For example, in describing the traps used by the mountain men, Russell traces the history of iron-jawed traps back to the sixteenth century. then he takes the theme of traps into the mountain men period and provides just about every detail on the subject the reader could want.

diary of a trapper: by osborne russell
Anyone who wants to know the realities of the mountain man’s life would do well to pick up a copy of Osborne Russell’s Diary of a Trapper. In 1834, Russell was hired by the Nathaniel Wyeth Fur Company and began what would become a nine-year odyssey of trapping, hunting, fighting, and surviving in the Rocky Mountain region. while his diary is not the only primary source on the subject, a trapper’s diary is perhaps the best. Russell’s journal describes the geography, various Native American tribes, and wildlife, as well as details of the life of the mountain man. If he’s interested in the Mountain Man era and hasn’t read A Trapper’s Diary, he’d do himself a favor and get a copy of this timeless book.

another main source, this one describes a series of adventures similar to those of osborne russell. However, one thing I personally appreciate about this journal is its description of a trip to California with Captain Joseph Walker. helps reinforce the reality that the Highlanders were more than hunters, they were explorers who traveled between nations of many different peoples.
