1. discovering who i am by lysa terkeurst

finding i am: how jesus fully satisfies your heart’s cry by lysa terkeurst explores the seven “i am” statements of jesus in the gospel of john. the subject matter is dense, but not overwhelming. In the video portion of the studio, Lysa is on location in Israel. sometimes I forget that the places in the scriptures are, in fact, real places in the world. As Lysa says, “I truly believe that one of the most powerful things we can do to help us better understand the Bible is to learn about the cultural context in which it was written (p. 77).”

Couldn’t agree more. this study brought the scriptures to life for me.

what I also love about finding i am is that it can be done on your own time or with a group. there are optional sections at the end of each week of homework that can be used if the reader wishes to study further.

Need more proof that this is a great option for your next Bible study? take a look at my book. the cover is loose from the spine, I have crooked pages and writing everywhere. You can tell the quality of a Bible study by the condition of the book at its conclusion.

2. james by jen wilkin

can’t say enough good things about jen wilkin. While I was in college, I came across her teaching materials and her podcast, and for weeks that was all I listened to. she would go out for a six mile run and listen to her teach through genesis, joshua, judges, hebrews, etc. It was the first time I fell in love with learning the scriptures. not just the scriptures themselves, but taking the knowledge from my heart and allowing it to feed my head knowledge.

you can find jen’s lifeway studies, but some are free to download, like james!

jen is a big advocate of biblical literacy, so her studies are a bit more dense than others I’ve met. However, there are lessons I learned in studying James’s book that I will never forget. such as: learning to control my tongue, how to be impartial, listen to a word of scripture and live it, or how to be patient in suffering. James can be dense, but he is worth every second of effort and study.

There are several other brilliant studies written by Jen, including Joshua and Judges that are not currently available for download but should be available soon. I’ll post an update when I know where they’ve gone. For now, you can find the link to download James’ Study here.

3. one in a million by priscilla shirer

One in a Million: A Journey to Your Promised Land by Priscilla Shirler is written as a book and a seven-session Bible study. One in a Million is based on the story of the Exodus and how out of two million adults in ancient Israel, only two made it safely to the Promised Land. that’s about one in a million. So the question is, how do those one in a million do it?

I read the book in my first year of marriage and couldn’t put it down. the concept is empowering and motivating. Looking for a good read that doesn’t necessarily have homework? Have you felt discouraged and ordinary? this studio is for you.

4. brave by angela thomas-pharr

brave: honest questions women ask by angela thomas-pharr was a delicious breath of fresh air for me. For any type of person, the structure of the study itself can seem a bit overwhelming visually. give it time though. I promise you the material is worth it.

each week of study in brave a different statement is analyzed. for example, “I am exhausted” or “I am undisciplined”. this format allows each week to be a separate component. the topics do not build on each other, which makes this study easy to do on your own. or, if you’re bravely walking with a group and miss a week, you have less of an impact on the studio overall.

angela’s teaching is always so vulnerable and real. If you are looking for a realistic bible study that relates to any woman at any stage, I highly recommend this one.

5. perfect by angie smith

Seamless: Understanding the Bible as a Whole Story by Angie Smith is another study I couldn’t put down. For weeks that was all I talked about. First of all, I’m a fan of a map. I’m not sure why, but if the studio has a map, I’m usually fine with it.

second, for me this Bible study was not heavy. the stories chosen in the scriptures are ones i’ve studied before, but angie presented them in a fresh new light. the familiar became completely new to me. seamless shows the thread that connects the people, places, and promises of the bible. Whether you grew up in the church or are looking for your first Bible study, Hassle Free is for you!

Finally, there are two versions of this study. one is written for adults and one for teenage girls. Although I haven’t read the teen version of this study, I’ve heard great reviews. For any mom who wants to find a study to do with her teenage daughter, she might as well give it a try!

6. discerning the voice of god by priscilla shirer

Discerning God’s Voice: How to Recognize When God Speaks by Priscilla Shirler was written for those difficult times when you can’t seem to hear God speak. Have you ever wondered if you are hearing the voice of God or just the voice in your head? Are you unclear about God’s will for your life? This study was written to help you find greater confidence, clarity, and insight when it comes to God’s voice.

priscilla is one of my favorite bible teachers. i first heard her speak at a conference in st. louis, and her teaching captivated me. When Priscilla teaches, she feels like he’s sitting at the coffee table with a good friend talking about Jesus. his passion for the word of god and communicating his truth to others is contagious.

I will say that discerning the voice of god was a study I would recommend doing in a group. the topic of discernment is one that I think is best discussed with a group. It is a vulnerable and thought-provoking subject.

7. life lessons from women in the bible by rhonda harrington kelley

Who are your role models? Are you a celebrity, social media influencer, parent, or friend? Several years ago, when I was a young bride, I realized that I didn’t have a Christian woman around who could help me learn to be a wife. As a woman, how do I live in a way that honors Christ?

After much searching for that role model, I finally realized that I had all the resources I needed in the bible. Scripture is filled with dozens of examples of strong, courageous, and faithful women living their lives for Christ. Life Lessons from Women in the Bible by Rhonda Harrington Kelley is an excellent study resource with examples from these women. If you feel lost on how to grow in your faith, I recommend reading the stories of women in scripture. God gave them for a purpose.
