Even if we don’t recognize it as often as we should, reading is a gift. Many children around the world do not know how to read or do not have access to many children’s books. that means they can’t have parents read them bedtime stories and they can’t stay up at night to read with a flashlight under the covers. they cannot experience princes or princesses bringing down fire-breathing dragons with a single swing of their swords, and they cannot escape the pages of moonlight escapades at boarding schools or talking animals luring their friends out of the zoo. . that’s not fair and companies around the world are beginning to realize this.
So here’s a list of our favorite book companies that donate to social causes, some of which help children in their reading efforts, and some of which give back to the world in other ways when you buy a book.

hachette partnered with neighborly to donate over 12,000 books to communities during lockdown. this is combined with the children’s book project which delivers books to schools in need and allows teachers to spend vital time interacting with children and parents during these difficult times. In addition, Hachette annually donates approximately 100,000 books directly to library systems and gives away signed copies for charitable fundraisers.
2. books for walkers
walker also has a long history of supporting children’s charities. the chosen association is book aid international, which is an organization that donates books to help promote literacy and development in sub-saharan africa. they also make donations to neighboring schools and hold raffles for prizes. Walker’s staff have established a “give as you earn” scheme, to also give back to their community.

3. animal stories
For every book you buy from them, manimal tales donates a portion of the proceeds to a non-profit organization called room to read. The nonprofit organization focuses on eradicating illiteracy and promoting gender equality through a special emphasis on girls’ education. has helped more than twenty million children in asia and africa by collaborating on children’s reading habits with local governments, schools and communities.
4. harpercollins
harper collins contributes to news corp’s philanthropic partners program, allowing it to play an integral role in advancing the causes of literacy, innovation in k-12 education, and empowering youth. Like Hachette, she donates tens of thousands of books to organizations like First Book, Housing Works, Project Cicero, and Volunteers of America.
5. scholastic
scholastic hosts the scholastic book fair ‘all for books’ program annually, in which it matches donations made by book fair attendees and donates the proceeds to a series from charities, including the Kids in Need Foundation, Reader to Reader, Inc., and the National Center for Learning Families. It also has a sleepover program through which it provides new books and new pajamas to needy children in adoption centers.
6. random penguin house
This publisher has donated more than a million of its children’s books to the first book on behalf of the obama family. now, as part of the hope love give campaign, they plan to match every three dollars donated with two books, so they can reach more than a million children by the end of the year.
7. librio
Librio is a personalized children’s book company that also believes in sharing the joy of reading and the “transformative power” of books with children who don’t have easy access to books. Like the manimals tales, librio is also associated with room to read through his “more than a book program”. for every book you buy, librio donates one through room to read.
8. I see myself!
another children’s book company that makes personalized children’s books, see me! He also donates to charities, including the Children’s Cancer Research Fund, Space to Read and Read Aloud 15 Minutes. The Cancer Research Fund is dedicated to research into the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and cure of childhood cancers and other blood-related disorders. apart from space to read, I see myself! peers with read aloud 15 minutes. believe that reading aloud to infants and toddlers from birth for 15 minutes a day helps them be more ready to learn in kindergarten and gives them the literacy skills they need to be successful in school.
