the newly purchased r2d2 backpack packed with 64 pointed crayons, 3 packs of extra wide notebook paper and a couple of boxes of kleenex are ready at the front door. a new school year is about to start. but what is that feeling? it’s that queasy feeling deep in the pit of your stomach. I’m not sure if I’ll have friends in my new anxiety class. To the rescue come encouraging books on how to make friends to share with our children.

Boy + Bot by Amy Dyckman is a fun story about a boy and robot who become friends. Even though one is a boy and one is a robot, they can still be friends.

Be a Friend by Salina Yoon is the story of a young boy who loves to mime. It’s hard to find a friend who appreciates such a unique talent, but he meets a girl who is his perfect friendship match. This is a great story for kids who feel different and need encouragement to find their inner courage to make a friend.

Sometimes our friends are imaginary. The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend by Dan Santat is the story of an imaginary friend looking for his person. It’s a beautiful story about imagination and friendship. Beekle won the 2015 Caldecott Medal.

one of the reasons i like meesha makes friends with tom percival so much is that it really encompasses all the feelings one can have about making new friends and making those feelings feel normal. sometimes when we beat our own drum it can be difficult to relate to others. and, that’s fine. because there are people who will appreciate our uniqueness and will want to be our friends.
