10 Self-Esteem Books For Little Black Girls I Wish I Owned As A Child – Kb in Bloom

I’m a 90’s baby and when it came to the kind of books I remember reading as a kid, none of them included books with my skin complexion and hair type in them.

I thought maybe there weren’t any black authors yet who wrote books for black girls like me.

When I was in elementary school, I read books like bernstein’s bear, the saddle club, and junie b. jones.

but then again, none of those books featured characters with cute little black girls who looked nothing like me.

However, I had a lot of imagination as a child. I would literally get out my notebook and create my own little character book.

And if that wasn’t enough, we had a Florida studio theater that would come to my elementary school to help us write short plays.

It’s amazing that I never took creative writing at ugh because creative writing was one of my favorite subjects in school.

Books for the everyday black girl mean a lot to me.

When it came to generating a list for Black girls and their moms looking for new books that captured the essence of Black girl images of magic, it was important to me that I do extensive research.

I mean, it’s amazing and a good deal to be able to say that narrowing this list down to 10 of my favorite black girl books was hard.

Most black dancers can understand that their European ballet teacher told them that their body, as it is, was a problem.

Unfortunately, the lies of those teachers made many of us think that our body type could never get very far in the world of dance.

Around Father’s Day, I kept seeing hair love on my instagram timeline and noticed moms and their daughters gifting this book to dads.

I love that the love of hair captures the moment that Black parents around the world can relate to when doing their daughter’s hair.

the title tells you everything you need to know. when god made you was first published in 2017, i saw it in many christian bookstores.

Fast forward to today, I’m glad to see it in stores like target and walmart.

Also, the simple but profound message that God thinks of you made me happy to discover a book as beautiful as this one.

10. Little Leaders: Bold Women in Black History

Finally, we got to the last book on the list and I had to complete it with little leaders.

If this book sounds familiar to you, it is because dream big little one and little leaders were written by the same author.

Similarly, Vashti Harrison uses beautiful imagery to showcase the accomplishments that should motivate our young Black women.

Also, her books have become popular and inspired not only black girls but all girls of color and I love seeing the crossover.
